The Woodcraft Novelty Company ends a shutdown since December 1 and restarts with about twenty workers. Work on a new factory addition continues as machinery is moved and preparations are made for expanded wood novelty manufacture.

Veteran Senator Simmons of North Carolina announces his last primary contest for re election. Josiah William Bailey of Raleigh enters the race while Simmons cites Congress duties and lack of funds to campaign. He says he will file for the Democratic primary on June 7 1930 and rely on friends to carry the effort. He adds he will retain his Senate duties and leave his renomination to the voters.
The Boone Baptist Church distributed a twenty four page Year Book and Church Directory printed by The Democrat. It includes an alphabetical member list resident and non-resident, church officers, organization histories, and advertising pages to aid free distribution. Reverend P Hicks supervised the project.
News from Boone reports the death of Mrs A W Hardin at her Taladega Alabama home on the 7th after a brief pneumonia illness. She was 56. Survived by a husband and two children, a son and a daughter. She was a native of Alabama, and her husband was known as the son of the late James Hardin.
A rabid dog owned by Conrad Hodges ran loose for over four hours through Boone and nearby areas injuring a boy and biting several dogs. Police killed the animal and officials confirmed hydrophobia. Pasteur treatment began for affected animals and dog owners were warned to confine or kill pets during the scare.
Thomas Wilson of Zionville announced he purchased Rich Mountain Poultry Farm from Mrs. Mollie Adams and is now managing the business. He has bred blooded chickens with pullets averaging 224 1 2 eggs and operates 525 hens with incubator capacity for 2 000 eggs. The farm sells eggs, baby chicks and offers custom hatching.
News reached T F Greer on Tuesday of the death of his brother M L Greer at his home near Lenoir. Funeral services were held at Tabernacle Church with Rev W L Trivett officiating, burial in the local cemetery. A Caldwell County native and prominent farmer, he served on the Caldwell County Board of Education and on local bank boards. Surviving are a widow and several children. Attendants from Boone included T I Greer and Roby and Horace Gr.
The Baptist Ministers Conference of Three Forks and Stony Fork associations met Boone Baptist Church Tuesday January 14. Pastors discussed duties to self church community and parishioners with talks by Gordon Wilcox Hicks Wilson Hagaman and others. Lunch was served and meetings shifted to monthly Mondays after the first Sunday at Boone Church.
Boone Civitan Club met January 9 at Valle Crucis School with nineteen members. J Frank Moore urged shared responsibility for programs while I G Greer outlined Civitan Essay Contest details for the high school. Rev L F Kent praised the school founded 1842 and revived in 1894, noting its role in education and spiritual values.
A 30 gallon copper still four gallons of inferior corn whisky and half gallon of backings were seized in Boone's Fork Monday afternoon. Sheriff Farthing and deputies Wyke and Gross with Eugene Story of Blowing Rock traced the illicit plant about five hundred yards from the Caldwell Watauga line. Two men refilling mash fled as officers closed in. a chase followed. The sheriffs team does not know the blockaders but believes capture may be arranged.
