Death of Colonel Cowles a Wilkes born Civil War hero
The News and Observer chronicles the life of Colonel William Henry Harrison Cowles of Wilkes county. Born April 22 1840 he served bravely in the Civil War rising to colonel after acts of conspicuous bravery. He later pursued law and public service including terms as Reading Clerk of the House and Solicitor of the tenth district before serving in Congress. He retired to a Wilkesboro farm where he remained active in public affairs and loyal to Southern patriotism. He died after a life of valor public service and farm stewardship.
