Highway 28 Extension Moves Forward Through Scenic North Carolina
The State Highway Commission at the December meeting approved extending highway 28 from the Tennessee line west of Murphy to Virginia north of Twin Oaks. The route will connect Blowing Rock to Highlands, pass through Pisgah and Nantahala forests, climb to 3500 feet, and cross the Blue Ridge eleven times. The plan aims to create a 338 mile continuous road from Tennessee to Virginia with federal numbering and national park linkage.

Jim Grimes Dies in Johnson City
Jim Grimes a former Boone resident living in Johnson City died suddenly last Friday at 8 AM. He was 638 and survived by four daughters and eight siblings. He worked as a teamster for years and once at Captain Tom Coffey's. He collapsed after a wrist pain while driving his team and died before aid arrived. Funeral services were held Sunday at the colored Baptist church and he was buried in a local cemetery amid mourners from both races.

Christmas Seal Drive Nets 80 Dollars in County
Mrs. Stanley Harris county chair for the anti tuberculosis Christmas seal drive reports eighty dollars in stamps sold before the holidays. The sale was through the local American Legion Auxiliary with thanks to canvassing ladies and buyers. Seventy five percent stays in Watauga for local relief and the rest goes to the state organization. The total this year is three times greater than any prior year and aims to combat the white plague. Last year the drive netted over twenty seven dollars.

Injured hunter recovers after accidental rabbit shot
