Major Robert G. Cherry of Gastonia was unanimously elected state commander of the American Legion Raleigh was chosen as the 1929 city by the legionnaires at their 10th annual convention in Charlotte Tuesday. Six Killed When Buildings Collapse in Shelby North Carolina
Shelby Aug 29 six persons died and a dozen were injured as three business buildings on West Warren street collapsed into an excavation daily work to deepen a basement for a bowling alley led to disaster. The First National Bank area and nearby McKnight and Gardner buildings were crushed. The Shelby militia cordoned the area as rescue crews searched for missing workers and possible further fatalities.
