The Color Line in National Campaign Debate
The Winston Sentinel discusses whether a color line will shape the national campaign. It weighs arguments that McKinley era negro office holders threaten white supremacy against views that the race issue is settled and the Democratic party aims to erase the color line. The paper notes the 1902 effective date of a constitutional amendment and questions if promises to wipe out the color line depend on eliminating ignorant voters. It concludes that white supremacy may not dominate the national race, but negro postmasters remain a Republican era product.
