Annual Blowing Rock Horse Show Slated August Fifteenth

Prizes in thirteen classes plus jumps to be awarded at the fifth annual Blowing Rock horse show August 15. Entries expected from across the South as managers of top stables inquire. Special events include potato, chair, and doughnut races and high jumps. A grand stand and riding ring will be built on the old Mayview golf course for the event.

Religion Is Not Main Issue Says Daniels

In Blowing Rock on July 28 Josephus Daniels argued North Carolina is not a bigoted state and that Smith’s religion is a minor issue. He said the main objection is Smith’s wetness and warned against assuming the south opposes Tammany for graft. He predicted dry Democrats will win and that Smith’s wetness could be offset by electing dry congressmen.

Hoey Answers Daniels at July 28 Speech

Clyde R. Hoey defended against religious campaign attacks in a speech here. He called out alleged Knights of Columbus oath propaganda and said religion should not be a major issue in the Democratic campaign. Josephus Daniels responded from Blowing Rock, arguing Hoey exaggerated religion in his remarks.

Attendance is expected to break records as the Watauga County Sunday School convention gathers August 9 and 10 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church five miles east of Boone with opening session August 9. Prominent speakers include Miss Daisy Magee of Raleigh and Miss Freda Rose of Louisville. A pennant for the largest represented Sunday school will be awarded Friday afternoon based on distance to the host church.

Prof W L Winkler of Boone and Blowing Rock says a novel method using small seed potatoes planted in rich ground yielded a large, early crop. Despite frost, growth was robust and harvest produced large, mealy spuds, potentially revolutionizing Watagua county potato farming.

Miller Faces Yet Another Embezzlement Charge

High Point July 26 Claude E Miller local broker was charged with embezzlement by Charles Morrison of Greensboro who alleges Miller kept 825 75 from him a check returned marked insufficient funds A warrant was served at Guilford General hospital where Miller is a patient Deputy Sheriff Gray said Boone earlier sued Miller He was released on bond and an additional 10000 was required in the latest case Morrison says he loaned Miller 1825 70 and Miller indorsed the check then demanded it back for records and promised repayment but it was not returned

Dr Clarke Addresses Civitan Club On Four Square Americanism

Dr Clarke of New York and the University of the South spoke at the Civitan Club luncheon in the Daniel Boone hotel on Four Square Americanism. the talk was praised as one of the most interesting and helpful the club heard. Rev Dr Gordon of Cove Creek Baptist and club members discussed inter club meetings with Salisbury to foster closer cooperation between state Civitan groups. committee lists and officers were announced, with G K Moore as president and a full board named.

Outlook Bright Says Doughton Forecasts GOP Defeat

North Carolina congressman R L Doughton predicted in the district last week that Republicans will not carry a single congressional district in the state. He argued the party's late-summer confidence fades by November and cited his visits to nine counties showing strong Democratic support and a popular state ticket. High Point broker to be tried Aug 4

Claud E. Miller a High Point broker faces a preliminary hearing on August 4 before Justice Edwin N Hahn after alleged embezzlement of 16000 of local municipal funds. He has been in a High Point hospital since charges were filed. Authorities say city loans through Miller spanned two years and Miller is believed solvent, with a state insurance hearing likely to end his broker license.

Love Hodges Marriage in Mountain City Tennessee
