Twelve years ago J W Sullivan of Hartford Conn scratched his leg leading to inflammation and blood poisoning. J Pierpont Morgan, visiting on a Southern Railway trip with President Spencer, heard from Ewing about a longtime section hand near White Pine whose home and savings were wiped out by a flood. Morgan gave the man three $100 bills to rebuild, asking Ewing not to reveal the act. The tale spread despite the request for secrecy.
