State Fair Hospitality Amid Rain and Rail Trials
The Iowa state fair presented the greatest event yet despite heavy rain on Tuesday night and Wednesday that nearly ruined the grounds. Attendance remained strong, the association earned some money, and rail service was strained with at least one crossgrained conductor named Riley. Travelers spent Friday morning returning home via Rock Island trains, with a notable stop in Oskaloosa where I N Carr and others shared a jolly day. The city boasted a well kept park with tame squirrels and extensive paving enhancing appearance and ease of travel.

Officers elected: President A R Dewey, vice president H J McCullum, secretary and treasurer C A Dewey. Next meeting set for S A White’s home.

Crowded Rock Island Train Fails Junction Fair Access

Mrs Phillips Dies At Home After Long Illness In City
Mrs. Jesse Phillips died Tuesday evening at 8 00 in her city home after a long illness. Born Mary Jane Lyon January 16 1837 in Miami county Ohio she married Jesse Phillips February 13 1861 and moved here December 1863. Four children survive Ida Negley W A Phillips Maggie B Knapp and J N Phillips all residents north of town. A lifelong Methodist she joined in 1858 and remained active in church and Sunday school until illness. Funeral conducted at the residence at 2 00 pm by Rev I B Schreckengast followed by church services.
