Des Moines reports the Iowa Supreme Court ruling that interstate liquor shipments cannot be barred by state authority. The decision could trigger a special legislative session to address emergencies and funding gaps, including fire losses at state institutions and insurance needs.
Harvey McClurg and Harvey Heller of Valley Junction sue Mayor J M Brenton and police chief Fred A Brackett in Des Moines for 20000 alleging bloodhounds used on a trial tracked them to their homes and damaged their reputations. Plaintiffs have filed petitions in the suit.
The supreme court holds that the Iowa mulet law prohibiting liquor sales by agents of nonresident dealers conflicts with interstate commerce laws, rendering it unconstitutional. Chairman R H Spence of the Republican state central committee issued the official call for the state convention to be held in Des Moines on July 30. Delegates total 1 233 with one at large delegate per county and one additional delegate for every 200 votes or fraction of 100 over cast for Gov Cummins last November.
A devastating blaze struck Farlin Greene county on the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul line, consuming every store including the post office. Total losses surpass forty thousand dollars as the entire business section was reduced to ruins.
In Newton Mississippi a young woman named Thomas plunged a butcher knife into Louis Wade in the restaurant kitchen during a quarrel, inflicting fatal injuries to his abdomen. She claims the act was accidental.
