Chautauqua Celebration Draws Large Quiet Fourth Crowd
The July 4 Chautauqua drew about 9000 people with 4000 paid admissions and 2000 season tickets plus 2000 to 3000 free under ten. General Black attended, receiving welcomes from Mayor Alberson and veterans. Music by Columbus Junction and U T D bands drew crowds, while Brinton’s moving pictures and an evening Campfire talk capped a peaceful, well run celebration.

Grandmother Drake Dies After Long Illness at Son’s Home
Yesterday morning at 8:30 Grandma Drake died at the home of her son Pulaski in Maxwell, after a long life marked by faith and family. Born in Brook County Virginia on February 13, 1817 she married Hiram Maxwell in 1835 and David H. Drake in 1853. Her four sons served in the army. only Vincent and Pulaski remain with their wives attending her final sickness. She joined the Methodist church at thirteen and faced old age with a cheerful spirit, her path growing brighter until she was gathered home.

Milwaukee Train Arrives to Finalize Tracks at Gracehill
A special Milwaukee train with company officials arrived Wednesday and proceeded to Gracehill for final track joining. The Ottumwa Courier says freight will be accepted to stations along the line but regular freight and passenger service starts September 1. Ballasting and line prep will continue. Mr. Schreckengast, urged by his church officials, will stay in Washington despite offers.

Crop reporters for July 1 show moisture ample for crops with heavy rains in the northwest. Corn rapid growth with late plantings improving. wheat oats barley fair. potatoes unusually good. hay harvest heavy statewide. Area planted in 1903 at 87 percent of 1902, down 13 percent.

Mrs Marguerite Schneider R.I.P. Veteran county resident
Mrs Marguerite Schneider died Saturday afternoon after years of poor health. Born in France in 1827 she married Eugene Schneider of Philadelphia in 1850 and lived in Crawfords villle and later on a farm southeast of the city before moving to town. Six years ago her husband died and seven sons and one daughter survive. Funeral services were held Friday morning conducted by Rev L D Young.
