The Duc DAntieur, famed for diamonds, spots a ring on M Placquet. Placquet pretends innocence while planning a scam with Justine’s venerable standpapa. The ring is swapped for a fake, and Placquet flees with five hundred louis as the duke’s trust is betrayed.
The article recounts a stage illusion with a ten franc ring gifted by a dancer and appraised as valuable by a Hamburg dealer, while the actor Placquet negotiates to keep the ring and writes to his fiancée Justine. It also recounts Houdin’s royal magic at St Cloud with handkerchiefs, a bell, and an orange tree trick witnessed by King Louis Philippe.
In a garden near a king’s court a rusty iron box is found beneath an orange tree after roots are exposed. The box contains six handkerchiefs and a parchment naming Balsaina Count of Cuguostro and a magic act to be performed sixty years later before Louis Philippe, with a sealed packet bearing the Cagtistro seal.

A January 1875 letter from ZB in Devil, Guide Rock requests help for Harrison township Kansas settlers hit by grasshopper famines. It lists families, crops, livestock, and stock prices, notes subpar settlement, and asks Washington County and others to ship aid to Edgar or Harrison Township Aid Society to avert starvation.
In a Paris shop Therese and Mantes showcase bonnets to visitors. A young client rotates a bonnet forming a drooping front and raised back, the ensemble evolves with a feathered aigrette, creating a new style that sells quickly and shows how Paris fashions emerge.
An old traveler’s tale describes a Hindoo Prince owning a clock with a disk and a pile of artificial limbs. As the hour advances figures assemble from the pile, each man forging a full frame and striking a mallet on a gong before dissolving back into parts. At noon and midnight all twelve assemble in sequence before vanishing.

A fragmentary note argues iron tools may date back to Cheops era in Egypt, suggesting iron use 3,400 years ago or more. If true, this could explain precise hieroglyphic carving on hard stone in pyramids temples and tombs and imply iron was in use up to 6,000 years ago pending further study.
