Iowa lawmakers push tax reform measures to curb tax ferrets and overhaul assessment rules. Bills propose state funding for banks and new districts, with aims to shift mortgage taxation and broaden exemptions for soldiers and households. Also discussed are mine safety reforms, state hospital funding, and school consolidation.
The cold weather and corn scarcity raise alarm among Iowa stockmen. Feeders report difficulty securing enough corn and hay at current prices. In southern Iowa supplies run low as stockmen plan to ship cattle abroad for feeding, with much stock already marketed before fattening.
The grand jury in Orange City did not indict E. W. Reynolds for the murder of Rev. Samuel Crofton near Ireton last August. The panel adjourned to the first Wednesday in February. Reynolds remains free on a $5,000 bond.
Officers chosen include President Mrs Isaac Lea Hillis of Des Moines and First Vice President Mrs J A Schmidt of Muscatine. A rear end crash on the Illinois Central line at Apple River TL killed four stockmen and seriously injured six others. The deceased are M C Lawler and H F Pancake of Wall Lake Chris Ferndon of St Arsgar and C R Blunt of Charles City. They were asleep in a bunk car when the accident happened.
Director J. R. Sage of the Town weather and crop service says the present snow totaling 6 inches protects the wheat from freezing and provides essential moisture for the year’s crop, ensuring double benefits.
A early hour blaze in Norwalk destroyed much of the business section including H. S. Trusler’s harness shop the Norwalk Journal Wells' drug store and Simon Casady’s bank. Total losses reached about 20000 with partial insurance coverage.
Rural Free Delivery service will begin March 1 in Oelwein Fayette County with three carriers covering 69 miles serving 1 507 people. In Tama County one carrier serves 254 miles and 4 percent of residents. in Toledo Tama County one carrier covers 24 miles serving 630 people. Carriers named are Owen A Finch and Frank S Harlan.
Gov. Cummins announces the appointment of aids for his military staff. The list includes I. B. Santee Danbury, Truman A. Potter Mason City, Charles E. Mitchell Marion, A. A. Penquite Colfax, Walter M. Davis Iowa City, C. W. Bepp Hawkeye, and Herbert M. Bigelow Grundy Center.
B Custer of Moville died in Le Mars from gas fumes after being found unconscious in his hotel room. He was 22, lived on a farm, and was away from home for the first time, having just secured railroad work.
Dependence Hoskins in Woodbury county. Iowa ranks first in farm crop value at 274 million dollars and leads in livestock value at 264 million for 1901. Other items note Davenport cases against Dr. Thomas continued to April. Judge Dewey sentences Richard Williams to death for murder with execution set March 13.
The panel visited Vinton Cedar Rapids Marshalltown Ames Boone and Des Moines to review lighting and sewage disposal. At Ames they consulted Profs Bissell and Marston and examined a new sewage plant using two bacteria species to produce purer effluent than some well water. The proposed Sunset Park site could host a low cost west sewer line with reduced litigation risk. Lighting options favored enclosed are lights and high pressure engine dynamo systems for compact efficiency.
Myra Lewis five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Lewis died at home in West Chester Monday afternoon after a diphtheria illness of about one week. The child was described as bright and lovable. Their other daughter, ten, is ill with diphtheria in a milder form.
Wm D Taylor died at his home Monday night after several weeks illness. Born January 26 1825 in Ashland county Ohio he served in an Ohio regiment in the war and moved to Iowa in 1865. He married Mary Paden in 1854 and had five children four surviving: Mrs R L Cherry Flo Taylor Harvey Taylor and Wilson Taylor. He married Margaret J Duke in 1887 who died 1898. He was a member of the Seceder church. Funeral service was held Wednesday morning conducted by Rev D J Masson assisted by Rev A K Davidson.
At the home of the bride's parents Mr and Mrs W G Gammon of South Washington at noon February 5 1902 Reverend S K Coates united Elizabeth Gammon and Andrew Corbin The ceremony featured an evergreen arch with pink and white roses The bride wore a cream albatross gown with cream silk and pearl appliques They received many presents including a fifty dollar cheque from the groom's parents A bountiful repas followed as Mrs Gammon hosted with warm wishes for the couple's happiness
Rev Daniel S Bradley of Grand Rapids Michigan has been elected president of Grinnell College Iowa by unanimous vote of trustees. He is known in the northwest and formerly led Yankton College South Dakota.
