Eyewitness recollections recount meeting Gen U S Grant at Young's Point and Millikin's Bend with a boy officer Fred Grant nearby. The piece describes camp life, sutler abuses, price shocks, a camp guard order, and reflections on the Vicksburg campaign and the bivouac of the dead.
Des Moines hosts the German editors convention September 5-7 with about 40 Iowa German papers expected. A massive Odd Fellows parade for the sovereign grand lodge is planned in Des Moines, potentially drawing 60,000 to 75,000 marchers and 150,000 spectators.
Rev. Frank Lomack of the First African Baptist Church was shot twice by Al McKinney while escorting Mrs. Sophia Tyler home from the opera. Lomack, gravely wounded, faces likely death as McKinney is held by police amid jealousy over Mrs. Tyler.
Henry Sawyers, a traveling grocer’s rep, died by his own hand in Sioux City by throwing into the Missouri River. William Hoffman of Muscatine County was nominated for Congress by the Second District Republicans on the 102nd ballot. Dr Daniel Backer of Whiting was adjudged insane and sent to Cherokee Hospital, first patient from Monona County.
