Mt. Pleasant notes many residents visiting, farm work underway, and social events. Obituaries, illnesses, weddings, and church activities are logged, including a funeral, a marriage at St Marys, and a Sunday school reorganization. Also recorded are railway updates, property moves, and local visits from relatives and travelers.
Mrs. Krahl formerly of Clay township and later West Chester died in Chicago on Sabbath at the home of Mr and Mrs Ed Corvette. She was past seventy and survived by her husband two sons Wilber of Oklahoma and Fred of Chicago and one daughter Mrs Corvette. The body was brought from Chicago and laid to rest Tuesday in Clay cemetery.
Miss Sarah Ritchey died Saturday at 4 o clock aged 86. She was born in Ohio and a long time resident since 1883. Aunt of Mesdames John and Isaiah Taylor. Funeral Monday at the Isaiah Taylor home conducted by Rev. A L Davidson. She was a devout Christian and member of the Seceder church.
Mrs Mary Mason died Saturday after a brief pneumonia illness. A Pennsylvania native, 74, she lived in Iowa about forty years and spent the last ten in Washington. She was the widow of Alexander Mason who died in 1893. Funeral services were held at her nephew Lysle McGugin’s home, then the body was taken to Newton for burial.
Melvin McCall three years old passed away Thursday morning from catarrhal pneumonia after a week of illness. Funeral held at home Saturday conducted by Rev. Palmer of West Chester Baptist Church. Interment at Elm Grove Cemetery with Rev. J. R. Logue supervising the cemetery service. The McCalls had lost their home to fire last winter. Community offers sympathy.
Mrs. Nathan Riley, former Crawfordsville resident, dies suddenly at her daughter Mrs. A B Smith in Ottumwa. Her son Ed had just received a letter saying she would arrive in Crawfordsville tomorrow to meet him at the train. Her body will arrive on that train and the funeral is set for tomorrow afternoon in Crawfordsville.
James Casey Sr. who fell from a hay mow in the livery barn and paralyzed his lower limbs died April 18. He was a native of County Tipperary Ireland and orphaned young. He came to America at sixteen and lived with an uncle in Ohio for two years before spending the next three years in Sigourney, Iowa.
James Casey Sr. served in the 13th Iowa with his brothers during the war and worked as a mason and on railway construction. He married Delia Burk in 1867 and had three children Martin James Jr and Mrs. Whittaker. A funeral at St James Catholic church was attended by over sixty veterans.
At an adjourned council meeting officials defined a southeast Washington sidewall along Green street to Abe Essley corner then north to Water street to join an existing walk. They ordered removal of a sidewalk crossing Miss Beasty’s lot to the Rock Island depot. A pipeline was ordered on East Jefferson from Kad Walther’s corner to B N W right of way and another on West Jefferson from Marion street to West First street.
The preliminary survey on the Milwaukee cut-off nears completion with two engineering teams active in the city. One team finalizes river work north of Letts, while Scofield’s party rests at Stephenson Hotel and then moves to west of town. Chief Engineer Baker met Chicago officials earlier in the week but released no new details.
Tobe Minnick completed the foundation for George Clapper's new East Side house with framers at work Saturday. Cas Slocum renovates his East Jefferson residence, adding a furnace and modern comforts. Ralph Smith finishes a Gospel Ridge home praised as a fine modern residence. Alex Houck installs a brick sidewalk on West Washington Street under the new ordinance. Chas Keck and L. D. Robinson also completed walks last summer showing required width. L. D. Robinson plans a steel ceiling in his East Side room used by Lemmon & Lewis.
An epidemic of small pox near Richland has affected fourteen to fifteen people many mildly at first. Robert Singleton contracted a malignant form and was critically ill but later improved. his wife has since contracted the disease. Quarantine has been kept on all affected families and the danger of further spread is considered slight.
Miss Maude Stinson recounts a summer trip to Oberammergau with Lewiston in 1901. They stayed with locals, attended Mass, and watched the Passion Play featuring 685 participants and 125 speaking roles. The visit included a mountain monument gift from King Ludwig II, a visit to Munich, and a tour of Herrenchiemsee Castle with rooms lavishly adorned in gold.
Washington Iowa April 25 1901 citizens ask why a muttimus is kept in a officers pocket while law is violated by the defendant. One citizen says the officer must enforce the law and punish persistent violation. possibly the sheriff can explain.
M Boileauff and Miss Carrie Garrett married Wednesday evening at 8 30 at the bride’s mother’s home in Feast Washington Rev J R Logue officiating About thirty friends and relatives witnessed the ceremony and a nice supper was served.
