Long county letter notes Robt Duncan lost a valuable horse and Eyestone family arriving to settle near Mt Pleasant. Mentions Easter programs, rail line surveyors, weather, local visits, births, deaths, and school terms with numerous named residents and places across Riverside, Washington, Wellman, and surrounding towns.
The old city council met Monday evening to finish the year’s business including street costs water works expenses and departmental reviews. Mayor Ross spoke and new councilmen and mayor were sworn in after which the old council adjourned sine die. Mayor Wilson urged expanding sewers and water mains as finances permit to improve sanitation.
Neighbors in Prairie Flower surprised Frank Noel on his birthday with an early morning gathering and baskets of food. A second evening party with about thirty youths added to the celebration. They played carroms, enjoyed music by the Prairie Flower Glee Club, and presented Noel a gold pen before departing.
City records show total running costs near $20,000 for the last fiscal year. Among the listed items are street maintenance at $3,250.51, bonds and interest at $3,350.00, salaries of officers at $2,910.40, and miscellaneous expenses including $2,675.76. Other items appear garbled but indicate standard municipal spending categories and a total around twenty thousand dollars.
In State vs John Bartholomew the jury found not guilty. In Mary L Wiedenbeck vs Mrs Dora Donovan the slander case was dismissed after plaintiff’s witnesses were examined. Defense counsel were C J Wilson and P J Hanley. The court adjourned sine die.
The Masonic fraternity celebrated the sixth anniversary of their temple dedication on Tuesday night with music recitations toasts and a banquet. About 1000 were present as M P Miller presided and A N Alberson acted as toastmaster. Speakers included Nat Parvin Cedar Rapids Judge A J Dewey and Rev J C W Coxe D D with Mrs Florence Patterson. Donovan’s orchestra provided music and a quartet featured Measra DD J Kieher A N Alberson Jesse Ashby and Stanley Miller.
Albert Stiles returns from New Mexico and several residents plan moves or visits to Iowa and Ohio. Advertisers Lemmon Lewis and Tondre Benz showcase millinery while C. W. Earnest and May Shadd receive license to wed. The Beacon reports prosperity, millinery openings, and community events including a temperance meeting and a church paper edit.
