Edward G. Roberts, judge of the Jefferson County circuit court, ruled that the Prue county war chest trustees may not divert the remaining $5,000 to civilian uses. The Legion sued after trustees tried to hire a county nurse with war funds. The court held the money was raised primarily for benefiting those in military service.
Indictments Grow From Herrin Mine Massacre Case
Marion Sept 23 The Marion grand jury added nineteen indictments including six murder charges and thirteen for assault to murder in the Herrin strip mine killings of June 21 and 22. In all 214 indictments were returned against many men linked to the mine violence after a summary report showed union and non union participants. Sheriff Melvin Thaxton and union leaders Hugh Willis and Will Davis were named among those indicted. The report notes some miners did not know they were brought to break the strike and guards viewed their duty as protecting machinery while authorities were blamed for failing to prevent mob looting of hardware stores.

Petersburg Indiana September 23 The Pike and Daviess County Commissioners and War Mothers chapters hosted a picnic at the Rogers place along White River the site of a new state highway bridge.
