The Daviess County Tuberculosis Association and the Farm Bureau will show the film Clean Hands and Heart countywide to stress herd testing. Washington headquarters supplied the film with dates set for Plainville November 7 Montgomery November 12 Longfellows school November 11 Alfordsville November 15. Elnora and Odon may host a showing November 14.
Four Daviess towns held elections Tuesday with Plainville avoiding the vote after an agreement. In Montgomery Democrats swept, in Odon Republicans won all offices, and Alfordsville elected a Republican slate amid light turnout. Elnora split ticket with mixed party wins. Reports say Plainville officers may resign before January 1 and Republicans may be appointed.
Plans for this year’s Christmas Seal sale in Daviess county were laid out at a Tuesday dinner meeting in the First Methodist basement. The Daviess County Tuberculosis Association sponsored the gathering with township representatives, clubs, and organizations present. Murray Aurbach outlined the sale plan and local chairman J E Pershing explained organizing each township. The meeting highlighted local use of funds, education on prevention, and plans to test cows for tuberculosis with educational film screenings.
Louisville dispatch reports early returns in the 1940 election showing A B Chandler leading for governor in Kentucky with 2837 votes to 2217 for King Swope as precincts tally. In New York City’s Twenty second district, Edward W Curley leads with 25,827 votes over Victor Santini's 7,480 after fifty of ninety six districts. the seat was formerly held by the late Anthony J Griffin.
Word reached Washington last night of the death of E. V. Rinker in Indianapolis. His wife, formerly Miss Elsie Jackman of Washington, was the daughter of the late J. M. Jackman. Rinker had visited Washington often and friends regret his passing. Mr. and Mrs. Mel Dayton and Mrs. Ray Tharp will travel to Indianapolis for the funeral.
Mrs J E Redman of St Louis injured last Friday near Maysville while en route to funeral for J Roy Williams. She was moved by Keller ambulance to a local doctor for X rays and will ride B&O train home this evening. She has stayed at H C Best home on the Maysville road since the accident.
Sheriff Ed Rankin took Sam Reeve Jr to Shoals where he pleaded guilty before Judge Frank E. Gilkison to writing a fraudulent check at the Lundergan Miles service station in Washington. He received a $10 fine, costs, and a six months suspended sentence.
Junior Kellams of First and Fast Walnut streets is reported improving rapidly after weeks of serious illness caused by a complication of ailments. Friends express relief at the news and hope for continuing recovery.
Mrs Hudson Brown of West First and Herron streets slipped and fell this morning while out fishing and suffered a fracture of her left wrist. She went to a local doctor to have the fracture reduced.
A Great Neck New York pedestrian found a note tied to a toy balloon claiming a kidnapping and directing to East Portchester Connecticut. Connecticut police dispatched a large force with rifles and tear gas to the address, only to discover a reliefing prank by a boy who admitted releasing the balloon for fun.
Indianapolis story reports Martha Chandjie found guilty by federal jury of conspiracy to pass counterfeit money. Intercepted delivery to Chandjie contained twenty bogus ten dollar bills. Judge Baltzell scheduled sentencing for Saturday morning. she was jailed in Marion County for inability to post $5,000 bond.
Joe Noe of Indianapolis will speak at a Townsend Old Age Pension Club meeting at City Hall on Thursday night. The public is invited to attend.
The Washington Country Club held its annual meeting at the Meredith Hotel with 25 members dining. John H. Kretz was re elected president unanimously. Harry Hanson became vice president and Ben Allen secretary treasurer alongside four directors. A WPA project to build a fish pond and dam near the course was announced.
Judge Wm. F. Calverley of Knox Superior Court overruled a motion by Auditor R. Ernest Clark in the Federal Motor Truck Company v. Clark case. The ruling allows the suit to proceed to trial, with the firm seeking $4,250 unpaid on five highway trucks. The decision also held county commissioners may purchase the trucks without an appropriation under a 1933 law, and that a contract was executed. Catherine Campbell returns home after a California summer.
J B Esbenshade, RCA field engineer from St Louis, surveys Temple Court sound equipment for the upcoming mid night Saturday opening of Last Days of Pompeii. References a 1909 two reel foreign film once shown in Temple Court Grand Theater. The current RK0 version features Italian-shot scenes with American casts and directors, touted as a spectacular 1935 release.
Robert Wayne Martin, son of G. A. Martin of West Washington, left for San Francisco to rejoin the U S Navy on the California after a 30 day leave during which he visited his parents.
The Democrat thanks Washington's business community for cooperation in producing a Full Coverage edition to be issued Wednesday November 20. Advertisers are urged to submit copy early so it can be arranged for maximum effect and reach. About 7,500 to 8,000 copies will be mailed to every home in the shopping area.
International News reports Republicans celebrate gains in half a dozen states with Democrats noting limited ground. New York Republicans retook the assembly, Hyde Park elected a Democratic supervisor for the first time in 35 years, and Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kentucky, and Philadelphia results show mixed outcomes. In Queens District 2, William B. Barry, a Democrat, leads over Joseph M. Conroy with 138,084 to 47,371 ballots. William F. Brunner wins the former seat.
The county board in session approved several old age pension applications on the third day this week. Beneficiaries include Wm S Fisher $3, Ella B Cavanaugh $2, Wm J Clark $2, Wm H Gilson $1 increase, Albert Harbison $2, Elizabeth Dillon $2, Dora Jane Potts $2, Rebecca Catshall, Sarah Wade $1 increase, Robert M Brooks $2.50, Mary L Bradley $2, Clara Clark $2.50, John W Smith $2.50, Mat Purcell, John O Perkins, and a $10 raise for Stephen W Helphenstine. A coal removal contract with Frank Clements for the Waggoner mine near Corning was also approved.
