Roland Cooper, West Point graduate of 1951 and son of Ruth Nugent Cooper of Bend, died in Korea on October 26. His mother learned the news while attending her brother Jim Nugent’s funeral in the city. The Cooper family has endured prior tragedy with a younger brother’s meningitis death.
Joseph G. Wood, former Daviess County resident and Indianapolis attorney, will speak at the Martin County Historical Society meeting at St John’s School Loogootee on Thursday November 6 at 730 PM. He will discuss his parents’ early history in Mount Pleasant and its role in forming Martin County in 1820. his father painted a town scene now in Shoals Library.
Friends and neighbors of Earl Goodwin in Steele township gathered with 10 corn pickers and 48 tractors to complete the 90 acre husking in a single day. The family thanks supporters for their kindness.

About 200 inmates sparked a six hour riot in Columbus Ohio state penitentiary causing an estimated million dollars in damage. Fires gutted eight buildings including the chapel and commissary while guards regained control by 10 45 P M. National guardsmen patrolled outside as delayed meals stirred concerns of further trouble.

Loogootee widow Rosie Robinson 82 died at daughter Mary Ann Fuhrman’s home on R R 4 at 4 46 PM Friday after a lingering illness. Born in New York City March 6 1870 she was the daughter of John and Rosie Rooney Logan and a member of St Johns Catholic Church. Services set for 10 AM Monday with burial in St Johns Cemetery. The body is at the Mill.
A blaze at the Regent Coal Mine in Sullivan County, Sullivan Ind, caused about 100000 dollars in damage. Fire spread through the shaft and smoke rose above ground while miners worked nearby. Joe Anstead, owner, said the mine had been operating for about two weeks.
