Street light failures persist in Washington due to a bulb shortage. Jesse Behle, in charge of maintenance, said replacements have been ordered for over two months with no delivery date. City officials note many globes are broken by youths using air rifles and sling shots. each globe costs 95 cents.
Commencement exercises for 41 graduates at St. Simon auditorium at 8 p.m. will feature Lt. Walter J. Felber of the Crane naval ammunition depot delivering the address. Lena Mae Bassler named valedictorian and Rev. A G Wie to confer diplomas. The program includes honors for Bassler and other awardees. full class roster lists 1943 graduates with numerous names.
The will of the late Mrs. Mary A. Dages was filed for probate in Daviess circuit court. The document, prepared July 31, 1939, names Flavian A. Seal as executor with $50 to St Simon church and the remainder to her children James, Frank, Arnold, George Dages and Mrs Emma Monaghan. An administration filing shows $1,400 personal and $2,000 real estate in the estate.
Earle Kremp, chairman, said only one in ten houses contributed cans in the city wide collection. The drive used pine trucks, city helpers, and 18 boys, with most boxes properly prepared. the next collection is planned for September and urged stronger family cooperation.
Nellie Helen Learmonth, wife of George Learmonth of the road, was granted final citizenship yesterday afternoon after a hearing before Judge Frank E. Gilkison in circuit court. A native of Scotland, she has lived in the country most of her life, residing in Bicknell before moving to Washington in 1936. Her husband was an official at Wheatland mine and was naturalized in Knox county in 1929.
Daviess county farmers who lost fences to the White River floods may obtain emergency fencing by ordering immediately through the county agent. A special allotment for Indiana fences is being prepared for livestock replacements only.
Dames Chadd of City charged with public intoxication was fined $5 and assigned a suspended 90 day penal sentence. William Drew, also of City, was arrested and charged with speeding with fines of $1 plus costs in City Court.
The Post Department will not treat May 31 and July 5 as holidays. post offices will stay open and delivery will occur on all city and rural routes. The note also mentions Robert Louis Stevenson’s final years spent on polo on a small island in the western Samoas.

Post Office clerks report widespread errors in mailing ration book No. 3 cards. Many are mailed before June 1 or with insufficient postage, torn or folded, or without the sender’s name and address. Instructions require the card to be mailed between June 1 and June 10 and to keep both sections intact.
Defense transportation director Joseph Eastman orders 30 000 buses and 23 000 taxis across 12 states plus DC and eight WV counties to cut mileage by 20 percent and warns additional cuts are needed as the gasoline rationing period is extended. The move targets fail me operators not stretching gasoline allotments to meet a 40 percent cut. The note also mentions current T coupons extended by 25 cents.

Washington dispatch reports 37,895 troops diverted from combat training to rescue about 5 450 flood victims in the Mississippi valley. Surveys show 34 lives lost and 51 430 evacuees mainly by troops, with thousands more aided by Red Cross and allied groups.
A North Africa communique reports renewed allied air sweeps over Sicily Sardinia and Pantelleria. An aerial battle near a Sicilian airport saw a large German Messerschmitt 109 fleet of about 50 aircraft routed by American flying fortress squadrons.
Washington May 27. Democratic tax leaders warned that a presidential veto or congressional rejection of the pay as you go taxation conference agreement would trigger tax chaos and inflation. They urged President Roosevelt to approve the bill while some advisors reportedly urged a veto.
