Mrs. Hummel was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis last Friday after a nail lodged in her lung. Efforts to remove it on Saturday failed, another attempt Monday led to plans to transfer her to Chicago where advanced equipment is available. Her condition is not grave but she has violent coughing. Mr. Hummel and their son will accompany her.
In a special meeting Monday night the council approved a curfew ordinance requiring anyone under eighteen to be off Washington Street by 11 PM. The law takes effect after two notices in Washington’s papers a week apart, with the first to appear in Wednesday editions. The report notes Fire Bell of Terre Haute.
A former resident died in Chicago. The body will be conveyed by train early Thursday morning to Git Funeral Home where friends may call until services Thursday afternoon at the ill Chapel. Interment will follow at Oak Grove cemetery.
Vertrice Barnard received a divorce from Kenneth Barnard in Daviess county circuit court and was awarded custody of two minor children. Helen McLemore was granted a divorce from Ottis How Norris and custody of three minor children with alimony set at $75 per month.
President Truman orders government seizure of the nations soft coal mines to keep miners at work after the May 25 strike truce. Cap Krug named administrator to run mines, with contract talks to be negotiated with United Mine Workers leader John L Lewis. Seizure follows prior rail actions to avert economic disruption.
The American Legion Auxiliary Burch-Wood unit announces a completed corps of volunteers to distribute memorial poppies on Poppy Day Saturday May 25. Mrs. Hudson Brown Poppy Chairman says the team includes Auxiliary members senior and junior and Girl Scouts. Veterans of both world wars made the poppies for distribution at Marion Indiana Vet Hospital. They will carry baskets and offer flowers all day to honor the war dead.
Ving Brown leads the corps of volunteers including Mrs John McEvilly and other Auxiliary members to hand out poppies. Proceeds fund American Legion Auxiliary welfare and rehabilitation for disabled veterans and families in need, with funds remaining in the local community and all poppy workers donating their time.
Washington discussed Secretary of State Byrnes and his blunt foreign policy assessment of the ill fated Paris peace talks. An Army Beechcraft C-45 crashed into the 58th floor of the Bank of New York building at 40 Wall Street after a 760 mile flight from Smyrna Tennessee. Five aboard died, including Capt. Tom L. Hall and 1st Lt. Robert L. Stevens. Parachutes were found but no signs of escape. Authorities opened a full investigation amid foggy conditions.
Secretary of State Byrnes bluntly outlined the United States push for peace and hinted at a 25 year Japan patrol pact alongside Germany. Chicago May 21 a second railroad strike involving one million non operating employees appears likely as 15 non operating unions plan walkout after strike ballots. They seek 14 cents more after a 16 cent increase granted April 3. The action is separate from the Brotherhoods trainmen and engineers.
The Navy appropriation for 1947 is set at four billion four hundred sixty nine million six hundred fifty nine thousand dollars, up 375 million from Budget Bureau estimates. The increase funds combat ships and planes and supports more naval reserve training and expanded research operations beyond the bureau’s recommended level.
Hospital notes record a birth for Mrs Marvin Kunkel in Jasper and a boy yesterday. Minor operation on Master Donald G Wilson today. Admissions include Mrs Bernard Mc Gee and several others from French Lick, McCormick, Walnut and R 1 2 addresses.
Wm J Wichman of Davies County announces completion of Ton Litter club enrollment in cooperation with the county extension office and Indiana Livestock Breeder Association. Twenty one farmers participate with 48 litters enrolled across Barr, Bogard, Elmore, Harrison, Madison and Washington townships.
Local police report Robert Botkins Jr of Loogootee confessed to taking three cars with Thomas Raney who is in a reformatory. Botkins faces vehicle taking charges with a $2,500 bond. The pair allegedly stole a Dodge in Cincinnati in 1945 and a 1941 black Chevrolet coach near Loogootee, plus nine chickens sold for $12. A third unnamed youth, about 16, accompanied them.
In Washington the miners welfare fund debate shapes as government negotiations loom for a contract to end the seizure. Industry reps expect a sum well below Lewis 70 million dollar demand, with tripartite control likely and an 18 percent wage rise. Meanwhile, Truman advisers describe rail and coal strike talks as hopeful, with Barkley and Rayburn at the White House, and new railway union proposals under discussion as mediation continues ahead of the Thursday truce deadline.
In Seymour Indiana on May a man was arrested for operating a motor scooter without a valid driver's license. He was taken into custody by local police.
E R Love was fined one dollar and court costs in a justice of peace court on a reckless driving charge.
