Winning Battle To Save the Bennington Levee at Plainville

Levee commissioner Charlie England announced a further three inch rise this afternoon raising the river two feet higher than last Sunday. Soldiers and civilians battled to reinforce the Bennington levee in northwestern Daviess county while other levees near Elnora and Elliston also faced pressure. Authorities reported some breaks avoided and crews remaining on duty to guard against further overflow as high water crested along the White River.

Entries Due For Projects In Daviess County

Entries for the annual 10 acre wheat project in Daviess county are due by June fifth. County Agent John F. announces entries may be filed at the office or with hip chairmen. Levee Breaks Save Vincennes as Wabash Flood Surges

Vincennes Indiana May 21 two large levees failed diverting the yellow water and flooding 45000 acres of Illinois farmland. Soldiers and civilians evacuated as water rose five feet over the Illinois countryside and isolated George Field and U S Road 50 west of Vincennes. Amphibian jeeps aided救 evacuation and saved residents including Mary Briggs of Vincennes. Death toll rises to seven after 18 month old Robert Sweeney drowns in a flood swollen ditch near Evansville.

Yamamoto Death Reported In Combat Aboard Warplane

Tin Can Salvage Collection May 27

Babe J. Kremp, chairman of the Daviess county tin can salvage campaign, announced a citywide collection of tin cans next Thursday May 27. He urged Washington housewives to save their tin. The county collection was held earlier and stored at the county highway garage. Cans will stay there until the city collection, then will be taken to Vincennes for disposal.

Daviess County Board of Review Set for June Session

The Daviess county tax board of review will meet the first Monday in June for a 30 day session. The five member board includes two court appointees plus the county assessor, auditor and treasurer. They will study spring assessments and make necessary adjustments.

The Daviess county council met in the morning to succeed Nicholas F. Barkley as a member, a replacement prompted by Barkley’s recent death. The council also considered an additional appropriation proposal, most of which was approved without change.

Frances Raney taken by death in Indiana in 59th year

Frances Viola Raney 59 wife of Samuel Raney died 11 30 pm Thursday night in Methodist hospital Indianapolis after a lingering illness from complications. Blue stamps extended to June seven for canned goods

Washington May 21 The OPA extended for one week the period blue stamps G H and J can be used to buy canned goods to ease end of month demand. These stamps are now valid through June 7 replacing the former May 31 expiry. The next stamp set B L and M totaling 48 points will go valid next Monday and stay good through July 7.

Shepherd to Seymour for Reliance promotion

Strikes Halt Many Workers in Detroit Plants

Detroit on May 21 reports 25,000 Chrysler workers idle as strikes persist despite orders from the national war labor board and UAW-CIO leaders to return. Two other UAW-CIO strikes ended as workers at Kelsey-Hayes and Ray-Day piston in Dearborn resumed, marking the worst strike cycle since Pearl Harbor and threatening to affect 85,000 Chrysler employees across 23 plants.
