City to Continue Practice of Meter Courtesy Tickets
Mayor Ralph I Burtis announced the city will extend the courtesy parking ticket program begun with the Washington Council of Fraternal Clubs. One hour extra time will be allowed for cars with non local XG plates in meter zones, while local licensees in other counties pay standard fines without courtesy tickets. Municipal primary vote shows low turnout in Washington
Washington turnout barely 25 percent as limited contested offices drew few voters. In the Democratic race Leslie Bingham beat Gervase Grannan for council seat 320 to 74, while Mayor Ralph J Burris led the ticket with 346. Nellie Tartity clerk treasurer and several incumbents ran unopposed. On the Republican side four council seats were decided with Luther Steele edging Paul Combs 481 to 476 for the third district, and other close margins across districts. Beasley led the mayoral Republican slate with 889 votes, while Lembert ran unopposed in the second district with 864. Re-nominated Democrat mayor Herschel Jones led the ticket, with Mee Lythgoe at 3419 and Carl Dillon 82. Charles Summers was defeated for clerk treasurer by Mary Shugert 914 to 296. Donald Grindstaff among Democratic council nominees. Only Republican council candidate was Sherman Padgett.

Body of Wreck Victim Sent to Missouri Home
Mrs. Ethel Plywell aged 47 died in an auto train wreck at Shoals and her body was shipped to Pattonsburg Missouri for funeral at Oak Ridge church Thursday at 2 p.m. She was born May 30 1903 in Pattonsburg, married John N. Plywell on November 27 1923 and is survived by four children Kenneth M in U S Army South Carolina Carmel Epperson Pattonsburg Carol Dee and Evelyn Dot. The family had been visiting Kenneth in South Carolina when the wreck occurred. Mr Plywell and two daughters were injured and were hospitalized in fair to good condition.
