Mayor John McCarty filed a veto against the council repealing the dance regulation ordinance. He argues the law protects public morality and requires a chaperone and female police presence at dances. Council may seek a two-thirds override next Monday night. five of six councilmen would be needed to overturn.
A mayoral appeal urges London residents to back the city against wartime disruptions. John W. McCarty, the mayor, calls for preservation of order and asks citizens to resist further eliminations or repeals of original protections.
In Columbus on May 8 a machine gun discharge by a National Guardsman killed two Cleveland men, James Ross aged 40 and Albert Freeman 25, as 650 inmates burst tents in a high wire stockade at the state penitentiary. Ernest Warren 45 was wounded. Deputy Ward en Woodward said the shot was accidental and an investigation is pending.
The benefit show held last evening at the community gymnasium by Central Christian church drew a good audience for the Builders' Minstrel. Earl Ellis publicly thanked all contributors who helped make the affair a success.
Cambridge Massachusetts May 8 1500 Harvard students in pajamas clashed with 40 policemen using bottles buckets sponges fruit and eggs in a riot at the Crimson Coast. A nearby dorm water battle sparked the melee which lasted about an hour. Freshmen Samuel C Davis Jr and John K Bottomley were rushed to a college infirmary with injuries including a possible skull fracture. Carroll H Parker Phillips Brooks Association secretary was arrested for disturbing the peace.
Harley Summers was arrested last night at West Washington by Sheriff Bowman and Deputy Sheley on a charge of intoxication. He was to be arraigned in circuit court this afternoon.
Russell Burris, 26, of West Washington, was arrested here yesterday on burglary and larceny charges. Clinton County Sheriff J. E. Ragen and Deputy Wm Marquis went to Carlisle to extradite Burris, who Illinois authorities say broke into a home near Breeze, Kentucky, before leaving that area. He was held in the local jail awaiting transport.
A May 8 report from Cincinnati notes two plane mechanics were killed in a crash. Hin Smith, 27, of Indiana, was identified among the deceased. The cause was described as insufficient warming of a heat measuring device, leading to a fatal failure during flight preparation.
In Hammond three unidentified bandits robbed the Maywood Trust and Savings Bank of about $16,000 in cash today fleeing toward Chicago Heights. Bank employees were involved, and one man allegedly recovered money from a teller’s cage. The incident recalls a prior year’s robbery of $5,2100 at the same bank.
An urgent call from Frank Cross of 806 Grove street prompted City Light officials to send a crew to rescue his house cat stuck atop a high tension pole. Meter man Wm Healy reached the scene and pushed the cat down safely after it had perched there for two days and nights.
Rt Rev Joseph M Francis of Indianapolis will make an official visit to St Johns Episcopal Church Sunday evening at seven. He will conduct the services and preach assisted by Rev J E Croghie regular pastor. Francis is a prominent Episcopal leader.
Petersburg special judge W D Curll announced a tentative finding on damages in the Bennington levee case. He plans to hear arguments and make any required modifications after a short local session and will work diligently to have the ruling ready for attorneys and presentation on May 29.
Percy R. Williams of the Pittsburgh board of assessors spoke at a noon Rotary Club gathering about the citys new graded tax to spur business and improvements and curb speculation. He described two main features: revenue from real estate only and a fixed municipal rate on buildings, with a graded tax on land. Williams said the plan has stimulated real estate development, aided tax relief for many, and encouraged land development as public improvements grow.
Democratic precinct committeemen elected in Tuesday's primary will meet Saturday at 1 PM to organize the county structure. They will elect a county chairman vice chairman treasurer and secretary during the session.
Carl White, 19, and Willis Bowman, sons of Slater White and Charles Bowman, were arrested this morning by Chief of Police Sullivan and held pending charges by local dealer Freddie Guire. Guire reported the youths had been stealing headlight bulbs from cars near his lot and said he would file charges this afternoon.
The city of Washington reports 2,396 school age children today, down from 2,406 last year. John H. Shipp, superintendent, notes a delay in publication due to wards being rechecked by enumerators to ensure all eligible boys and girls are listed. A chart of the enumeration follows.
William Srayette Brown aged 88, a Barr township farmer, died after a two year illness at 11 48 PM. Born January 29 1842 in Indiana, he lived one mile south of Montgomery and moved to Daviess County six years ago. Survived by wife Hulda Herendens, five children including Mrs Washington and Mrs Montgomery, five grandchildren, and a brother James A Gill to conduct funeral arrangements.
This morning in the Daviess circuit court the prosecuting attorney and attorneys for Walter Hack and John Burget agreed to hold trials during the current term. Hack’s trial is set for Friday and Burget’s for May 16. The state filed a bond count in Burget’s case and an amendment to the search warrant return.
Indiana Harbor Ind May 8 Apoeta Gor was rescued from Lake Michigan after drifting with two companions all night on a raft. The other two lads were found dead and coast guardsmen continued searching for area.
Greencastle Ind May 8 Ray Ragsdale a DePauw University student from Washington has been elected president of the Oxford Fellowship Club for next year The club covers students in ministry and missionary fields Ragsdale succeeds Olin Parrett who will graduate in June He is a junior and has letters in football and basketball He is named all state forward on the Indiana-Phillips Star selection Harold Jack Herbert Bennett Charles Query Vernon Loescher named to officer posts with Ragsdale as president
In South Bend Indiana on May, Frank Viola Jr. age 19 was found dead atop a box car in Joliet. A fractured skull was the cause of death. He left a note saying there will be no use in making a seat for me. Parents did not report him missing. Police believe he rode on a box car under a bridge.
Los Angeles 19 year old Frank Goldaboro holder of the junior coast to coast flight record started from Aero Corporation field at 7 44 44 p m Pacific time on his return to New York He aims to beat his 34 hour 3 minute record set a week earlier on the Los Angeles flight seeking a new mark on the eastward journey
In Lafayette Indiana on May 8 a Delaware county boy and girl were named the most healthy Indiana youth in the 4 H clubs roundup at Purdue University. Frederick Wingate aged 19 scored 98.8 in the health ratings while Mrs Boyle aged 15 led with 99.3.
