Alleged Scandal on Forest Chief Pinchot in Senate Fight

Washington March 11 Charges of a serious nature against Gifford Pinchot chief of the forestry bureau were aired in the Senate by Messrs Smith of California and Mondell of Wyoming. A secret understanding with the city of Los Angeles to secure water rights in the Owens River Valley was charged. Mondell denounced Pinchot for paying expenses of forestry officials and of urging government funds to bolster the bureau. Pinchot was defended by Polard and Beall as the measure faced grinding opposition all day. The debate touched the Snake River dam project and consumed the entire session until a quorum was missing.

Fragmentary Letter From Clarey to Horry in Indiana
