United Press reports that Pershing's regular army troops have landed in France at a French port on June 27. The voyage from an American port was completed safely and the unit identity remains undisclosed beyond being regular army personnel.
In Indianapolis Judge W W Thornton injunction on women voting at constitutional convention remains under challenge. Mrs Richard Edwards leads the Indiana Women's Franchise League urging continued registration until the issue is resolved. Over 3000 women registered today as suffrage leaders plan appeals to the supreme court.
Rowe June 27 A representative of the New York police department reached Colarxton today and will question Alfred Cocchi murderer of Seth Cruger. The Italian government has not replied to American Ambassador Page's formal request for Cocchi's extradition. It was explained Cocchi's citizenship was still not clear. Attorney General Stansbury in an opinion today stated that registration of women should continue.
Washington June 27 Exemption from military service will depend on strict tests. President Wilson will issue regulations soon outlining two checks. Applicants must prove their industry supports national interests and that their services are indispensable. Appellate boards will review cases of clerks caseworkers and farmers before granting exemptions. Four classes named: physically unfit essential war industry workers certain religious believers and men with dependents. Final approval expected today with public release likely tomorrow or Friday.
Corporal Thomas Sowder, in charge of the local army recruiting station, mails letters to single men who did not claim exemptions. Following Army instructions, he urges enlistment between June 23 and June 36 as President Wilson designates enlistment week to fill a 70,000 man regular army deficiency. Copies of the letters are being sent.
United Press report from Washington says King Leopold of Bavaria, praising German forces, conspired with the Russian Lenine adjutor toward a general peace without annexation or contribution. Dispatches claim Leniner spoke at a Russian workers and soldiers congress in favor of peace, with a delegate repeating Lenine's address allegedly as a wireless-sent manuscript.
German defenders of Lens retreated into Avion behind railway embankments and set up machine gun fortresses. British patrols maintain contact with the retreating enemy south of Lens as they face heavy resistance west of the city and prisoners claim the Germans are hard pressed and fear the worst. The British now hold all high ground around the Lens salient as Haig plans next move.
In Davies County the conscription board issued letters urging men to enlist in the U S Army in response to the president's call from June 23 to June 30. Officials stress the letters are an enlistment appeal and not part of any draft.
Six prominent suffrage activists from the nation Oth Women's Party choose to serve three days in the workhouse rather than pay $25 fines for militant demonstrations at the White House. They were convicted of violating traffic and obstructive acts during protests in Washington.
Princeton Indiana June 27 three hundred miners at Princeton Coal Company struck Tuesday when the firm raised coal price for labor from 10 to 12 cents a bushel. The workers say they will not work while the increase lasts.
Port, June 27. Captain Julianna Fass and eight other men were saved from the Norwegian steamship Coderic after it was torpedoed by a submarine off the English coast on June 1.
Washington reports that N. E. Willard, a coal mine operator, told the senate interstate commerce committee that railroads, especially the Pennsylvania Railroad, act as autocrats in the coal market. He said the company restricted output and car supply, noting a request for 250 cars yielded only eighteen. New York real estate men urged cheaper coal and warned of shortages in NYC this winter unless government steps in.
London reports a submarine sank the American vessel Galvia with bombs. Fifteen crew members survived and reached Brest. there were no casualties.
Daviess county closes in on a ten thousand dollar Red Cross contribution as the campaign nears the final total. President O Donnell notes a late start but growing generosity with precincts still reporting. Plainville and Barrioss township show strong local support while Odon and El Nora await canvass completion tonight. News from Bellmont and Washington underscores countywide participation.
