Recreation director Ernest Smith announces a radio broadcast of the Lou Hammeling fight for Washington. He touts topnotch entertainment and notes tonight’s Merchants versus Cors game could decide the first half league winner as the standings tighten with both teams near equal records.
A heavy transport truck driven by William A. Pyne Jr of Chicago overturned at the Y near Loogootee en route to Jasper scattering pretzels along the roadside. Pyne suffered a minor hand cut and most of the cargo was dumped from the truck.
The Poetry House Anthology, published today by Poetry House of New York, includes Eunice Creager of 610 S Meridian Street among more than six hundred poets. Creager has appeared in other anthologies, including a major work issued by Henry Harrison of New York.
Word reached here that Rev. Father Paul Ofer former assistant at St Marys church is appointed pastor at Naverton near New Albany He has been assistant at St Charles church in Bloomington since leaving Washington.
Cedric Stone is elected mayor of Bodenhamer at Hoosier Boys State. He is one of four local youths attending the affair and receiving this town leadership role.
Jack Wampler son of Mr and Mrs Harry C Wampler of East Van Trees street sustained a painful hand injury yesterday morning in a bicycle fall at East Side Park while entering with Robert Ritterskamp. X rays showed no broken bones.
Miss Alice Fisher of Muncie has taken over duties of senior visitor in the Vincennes GCUR office, succeeding Miss Elizabeth Vickery who has been sent to Muncie. Fisher will supervise the Washington territory.

Valencia June 22. Emal to aid by two British and one Greek cargo ships in Valencia harbor and carried out a raid on Barcelona. The British steamer Thorpeness, long exposed to bombs, was sunk. The 3,054 ton Greek steamer eel also went down. Shortly after the British ee Gloxinia, which had left in the evening, was sunk with the captain and crew of the Sunion reaching shore in small boats.
Washington will host the Seventh District convention of the American Legion and Auxiliary next Sunday at Eastside Park. Sessions run from 10 am with an afternoon program including Rev. Louis Phillips, the Washington high school band, the Vincennes Glee Club, and Drum and Bugle Corps. State and district officers, including Commander Russel Rhodes and Adjutant Bill Sare, are expected. Elections highlight the morning, Kiwanis Cabin hosts the Legion, pavilion hosts the Auxiliary, with several hundred attendees anticipated and local committees named for staging.
The Corcoran girls team coached by Miss Lena Dunn beat Oblong 12 to 10 at Robinson. Washington built a seven run lead in the first inning and Oblong rallied late. Brennan brothers and Kasvier led Corcoran’s offense while Smith starred for Oblong. A return game with Boonville is set for June 30.
A visitor in Gil county became suddenly ill this morning while en route by ambulance. Mr Miller was removed to a home hospital as responders assisted him.

Roosevelt will radio the message Friday night from Washington as he completes last minute Congressional actions and prepares for a cross country tour starting July 7.
The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held Friday evening at the Blue Bird Gate. An election of officers and committee reports will occupy most of the evening, with dinner at 6. The balance of the night will include discussion on improving business in the coming year. Citizens interested in business and community are invited to attend. Reservations via the secretary before Friday morning.
Local police report a Haysville native found dead inside a car. Investigators work to determine cause while examining the scene for potential clues and contacting family for next of kin.
In Pereburg a man born May 21, 1967 in Pike was taken for preparation after suffering injuries from a hit by a vehicle. Surviving widow and relatives are noted. Washington reports a burst of speed in Roosevelt 1938 recovery drive with approval of 291 Public Works projects totaling about 9.0 million in loans and 41.6 million in grants, funded by borrowers and a 96 million revolving fund. Almost 300 more projects worth near 100 million will be announced, aiming to boost employment and industry through federal and local funding.
