LaSalle Street Trust and Savings Bank, tied to an ex senator, shut its doors by order of the State Auditor. In minutes 1,500 depositors jammed LaSalle Street, with many weeping and others swearing and threatening violence as police guarded the building and a man smashed an upper floor window sending glass onto the crowd.
Washington reports Harry K Thaw’s attorneys filed a brief in the supreme court opposing his bail release. New York counsel announced a plan to transfer Thaw to Pittsburg to testify in his father’s estate matter, with a temporary withdrawal of the bail petition and a stay on custody interference during transfer.
Secretary of Labor Wilson forecasts more jobs than men across the United States citing bumper wheat crops iron trade revival mining and textile activity as key factors. Requests for over 89 000 workers for harvests have reached the department with Missouri alone asking for 30 000. The west is posed as the main challenge. He plans to negotiate with railroads to address this.
Washington June 12 Indiana honors the nation with H Holcombe son of John W Holcombe a former Indiana public instruction official and Interior Department employee achieving the highest scholarship record at West Point during the last year. Washington June 12 The house concurred with the senate amended repeal resolution by 216 to 71 including the Simmons Norris amendment. The repeal bill was sent to the president as forecast indicates clear weather with possible rain ahead.
The Senate approved the Panama tolls repeal bill 50 to 25 after a short session ending at 10:16 PM. The measure includes the Slimmons Norris amendment. President Wilson will sign in amended form, favoring partial approval over no action.
Irish societies of Pennsylvania rebuke the administration and Secretary Bryan by withdrawing an unofficial invitation to speak at Irish day reunions in Pittsburg on June 17. They oppose what they call interference in Pennsylvania politics and favor inviting Senator Commins of Maine instead.
