Death of trap shooter John L. Winston at 80 in Washington
John L. Winston 80, a famed trap shooter and longtime Washington resident, died suddenly from a heart attack at his home on N. Eighth Street in Pine Court. He suffered an earlier spell, was attended by a physician, and had been in declining health for six months. Winston, born in Covington Kentucky in 1858, survived by eight children and several siblings, was a staunch Democrat and Episcopal church member. He held a world record of 100 straight targets under national rules and recounted a 1892 challenge to Frank Parmalee with Buffalo Bill Cody present. Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of his children.

Daviess county entries dominated the Linton show Saturday night as Tri Kappas sponsors drew a large crowd. Grace Richardson rode a bay mare to junior 5 gaited first and open 5 gaited second, while L S Dickey’s horse ridden by Bob Dickey won open 3 gaited. Loren Fox’s sorrel gelding won junior 3 gaited with Mountainaire taking open 3 gaited second. Curt Sharpless placed fourth in junior 5 gaited. Herbert Fishel escaped injury when his mare Mareta Lee Princess went nervous after the ride.
