President Harding shows signs of improvement after a restless night as doctors report pneumonia and ptomaine poisoning under control. Bulletins note better rest, stable temperature around 100, and stronger heart action, while the president receives nourishment and continues the fight for life at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
Mrs John H Feagan reports daughter Miss Hazel Feagans escaped major Wyoming storms moving from Lander toward Yellowstone. She traveled with Miss Ila McCandless of Gorin Missouri stalling at Shoshone due to floods and plans to reroute. Hazel compares food to 1913 flood and notes bridges railroads and a river change course. The pair left Washington Dc in June for a coast to coast tour.
The State Board of Tax Commissioners will not alter Daviess county per person assessments, leaving valuations fixed by local assessors and approved by the county board. The state confirmed the board of review’s actions except for individual appeals or orders to certify for review. A hearing was held last Friday with county assessor C. O. McGaughey present. he expects no changes as Daviess figures compare favorably with others. Total assessment rose over last year by more than 268000 dollars. Next Tuesday twenty four counties will consider increases on personal property including household goods, autos, livestock, and farm tools. The affected counties are Tipton, Howard, Posey, Newton, Warren, Fountain, Grant, Hendricks, Hamilton, Adams, Floyd, Dekalb, Cass, White, Blackford, Wells, Pike, Morgan, Jackson, Jefferson, Owen, Harrison, Vigo and Allen.
Chicago police chief Collins declares many officers connected with bootlegging and orders captains to investigate. Any officer caught selling liquor will be dismissed and prosecuted.
In Long Beach New York on July 31 more than 200 cases of real liquor washed ashore as hotel guests seized it in a frantic catch as catch can scramble. Police and coast guard boats pursued rumors a rum runner dumped the cargo or it rose to the surface after shipment. The lucky grabbers focused on the haul rather than the cause.
Berlin reports a railroad disaster with 27 people killed and 25 injured. The July 31 incident is described as a harsh catastrophe with many victims, stirring international concern.

The city council advanced street improvement efforts with grants for paving George Street from Meridian to Plainville road, and for concrete curb and gutter along with sidewalks. A second petition for improvement of West Twenty-first Street to West Thirteenth Street with concrete curb and gutter was also approved.
Marion, July 34 A H Marion residents anxiously wait for bulletins on President Harding as doctors treat a heart condition. Friends recall a similar episode 25 years ago while townsfolk discuss updates and send messages from the local paper office. Harding wires Marion friends denying he will not return to Marion after leaving office.
Chicago birth control advocates announce a clinic to provide information to the poor despite Health Commissioner Bundsen denying a permit. Officials including Dr. L. T. Freland and Seymour M. E. district members inspect sites to serve as a permanent meeting place for the Indiana Methodist conference nearby.
The Chautauqua ticket sale proceeds with 750 tickets available at 2.00 each, down from 1000 last year, and demand may exceed supply says Rev L F Sargent. Greenwood & Co purchases the Trade Palace property at 710 East Main Street for $2,000 from Warren Van Trees and Chris Woges. The lot measures 60 by 120 feet at the corner of East Eight and Main. The building, formerly used by Washington Buick and Murdock-Gates, will become a clearing-house and distributing center for the four stores operated by the company in Washington and Vincennes. The deal closed Monday.
Kansas City officials report executives from Mid-Continent oil refineries met to consider plans to limit oil production for a period. A Chicago meeting last week outlined plans to close refineries during August.
London July 31 Allied replies to Britain's reparations note were delivered to the cabinet. Marquis Curzon indicated the contents would remain secret. Italy suggested Germany might be invited to join the League of Nations, with Germany reportedly willing. France Belgium and Japan responses were delivered in writing or verbally. The cabinet will consider French Belgian proposals and Baldwin is expected to reveal the government’s official attitude Wednesday.
Minneapolis dispatch reports Rev. E. J. Lucktow a 40 year old pastor from Superior Wisconsin was found dead in a hotel room from heart trouble. Miss Ruth Williams a Minneapolis girl ran from the room screaming and police say Lucktow flirted with her and induced her to accompany him to the hotel where authorities assert they were registered as man and wife.
The Daviess County Association of Indianapolis former residents will hold a Brookside Park reunion airing speeches orchestra and games. Principal address will be by A T Mayfield Indianapolis attorney with Frank Gargahan Cyrus Ward Robert Bailey George Abraham John B Coleman Joseph Schofield and William Mahan greeting attendees. Officers include Raymond O Dell Twitty and Mrs ma McCord as president vice president and secretary treasurer.
