Dodge City reports train 564 delayed forty days after grasshoppers caused a snow block on the rails. The Ford origin car struck a dew and wind hoppers blew over the track. Engineer Moran attempted to pass but failed. Crew cleared the track with shovels and sand before the engine could move again.
News from Narragansett Pier reports a large jewel theft at the Hanan residence. Mrs. Hanan’s gems valued at 150000 were taken along with a 2000 necklace owned by Pe Piper Ives. The incident sparked widespread local excitement amid the summer colony.
Evelyn Nesbit Thaw lands in New York from London with Jack Oiford to resume stage dancing after the Stanford White shooting and trials. She objects to appearing billed as Thaw, insisting she be listed as Evelyn Nesbit on posters and programs.

Albany July 31 The Frawley committee probes Gov. Sulzer campaign expenditures with evidence from Eugene Richards and Louis Sarecky. Sarecky refuses to answer about a Schiff check alleging improper contributions while Sulzer’s confidential secretary faces arrest for contempt as the panel rounds up testimony and seeks a court order.
Washington July 31 The senate lobby investigation committee cleared the way for cross examination of Martin Mulhall the alleged lobbyist in the ongoing inquiry. The panel voted to permit Mulhall to be questioned on his activities and connections as part of the probe.
Fire at the Milwaukee Chronic Insane asylum after midnight caused wild disorder among about 300 patients. Patients rushed wards, lights out, fought guards, and gained temporary control as a thunderous storm lit the scene. The commotion and screams carried for miles.
Harold F McCormick made a successful flight in a new aeroplane from Lake Forest over Lake Michigan to Grant Park Chicago, a distance of 35 miles, about 28 minutes at 1 1/4 miles per minute, piloted by Charles C Witmer. The craft averaged about 60 feet high. John D Rockefeller, winner of a sea window trust plan, said he will fly to his office daily once proficient.
Dispatches from southern cities indicate the Pekin revolution is collapsing. Nanking has pledged allegiance to the northern government, a wireless naval dispatch reports, and a telegram to Kiang Su’s military governor says rebel leader Gen. Huing Sing has left Nanking. Heiung Het Ling’s premiership is confirmed by the senate.
Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of his restricted recognition plan for Huerta's government in Mexico. Senators pressed him on his role in Madero's downfall, but most questions focused on the policy and his secret oath, with few details released. The hearing ended with a pledge of secrecy and the ambassador departing after handing over state papers.
At the Laguen Motordrome across the river from Cincinnati six more face severe injuries as Odlin Johnson of Salt Lake City crashes into a pole, causing a fuel tank to explode and spectators to be burned. Three are dead including Johnson and two boys from Cincinnati and Kentucky hospitals report others gravely burned and dying. Fire and panic disrupt the crowd as medical staff battle burns and stampedes fade.
Washington on July 3 reports tensions as Shackings clenched fist at Republican senators. Senator Stone charged that every Republican speech aimed to create a public panic. Missouri senator argued Republicans were sending fear-inducing messages to the country. Clark of Wyoming disputed the charge. Stone claimed a conspiracy to sow distrust among the public.
One of the worst wrecks on the Bee railroad main line occurred when passenger train No. 13 crashed into another train near Tyrone. Engineer George Funk of Altoona was killed instantly. fireman William Barton and road foreman C. E. Miller were seriously injured along with 146 others.
