Charles Veale of 1103 Downey avenue reports his son Jimmie suffered serious left eye injury after a toy truck was tossed into the air by his older brother at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. Four doctors advised removal of the eye, update not received by noon.
Extensive improvements are being made at the residence of Roman Jerger at 703 South East First Street. When the work is completed the dwelling will be among the prettiest in the southern part of the city.
Paul Wimmenauer of 308 West Oak street has passed examination and must report to the navy ship building yards next Monday morning for employment as a welder. He will leave for Boston tonight.
Phoenix, July 28. Robert Burgunder, 22, was sentenced to die October 6 in the Arizona gas chamber for the murders of two automobile salesmen in the desert. An all male jury found him guilty of killing Jack Peter and another salesman. The robbers took their auto and money.

Rochester Minnesota July 28 Dr William James Mayo co founder of the Mayo Clinic died at his home at age 79 He had been gravely ill since two weeks and was unable to attend the funeral of his brother Dr Charles H Mayo who died May 26 in Chicago The illness followed abdominal surgery in April for a perforating gastric ulcer and his condition worsened steadily.
Lafayette man Fred Marks selected and approved as construction superintendent for the Daviess Martin REMC project. He will visit Washington to meet local REMC officials and arrange to begin work locally. Engineers in Washington are conducting a preliminary survey for the 1000 mile project to guide contract letting and start dates.
Paris July 28 a French foreign office official said negotiations among Britain France and the Soviet Union have advanced to enable military staff talks to begin within days. Identical communiques will be issued in London and Moscow.
The B and O railway will discontinue trains 61 and 62 between Vincennes and St Louis on July 30 while continuing service between Cincinnati and Vincennes. In Harlan Kentucky Buck Farley, a reportedly intoxicated man, shot and killed Mr David Sullins of Knoxville Tennessee and his wife Dixie Ann Sullins at a gas station near Evarts on a trip to Black Mountain. Sullins, 30, heir to a $750000 estate, was struck in the heart. the gunman was seized later as officers blamed crazy drunkenness.

Master Jack Riggins of Odon RR 2 had a minor operation this morning. Mrs. John Fine of Petersburg was admitted today for medical treatment.
Mitchell A Downey 31 lifelong Daviess County resident died at 11 15 PM at his home 100 West South street after a long illness He was born January 31 1908 son of Arndirew and Mary Barton Downey Both parents are deceased He worked at Graham Farms as a carpenter helper He married May R Vaught November 26 1932 who survives Two children Wilbur G and Ralph A Downey survive with brothers Roscoe Downey Indianapolis Charles Downey and Mrs Alvin Gaines Washington One child preceded him In death The remains will be taken to his residence for calling Funeral James A Gill Sons in charge Funeral arrangements pending
Two year old Master Ronald Blaine Fimic of 14 Street suffered fractures to both hips when struck by an automobile in front of his home Thursday afternoon. Driver Mrs Celia Freeman, 37, of R. City, reported the incident to police. The child was taken to a doctor and then to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
Washington July 28 President Roosevelt answered a reporter with a blunt No when asked about the statement on a third term. The president smiled as he declined further comment, making clear his stance.
Daviess County Farm Bureau employees and spouses enjoyed an afternoon at the park with a noon picnic, entertainment by Farm Bureau members and a colored quartet, plus contests and speeches. Winners included Mrs Avila Riker in husband calling and Lawrence Schnarr in hog calling. Senator Brandon spoke for over an hour, and a Twenty Year Club was formed for longtime members.
