A man was killed when a street car struck and broke his neck and legs on West Main Street near Russell Home Friday afternoon. Police investigated the incident and responders declared the victim dead at the scene. Further details were not available.
Mrs Ida Gray of McCormick avenue was struck and killed by a streetcar on Main Street near West First and Second streets in Petersburg. The accident, investigated by coroner Dr M Holder, left her legs severed below the knee and a broken neck. Funeral arrangements set for Orwell, burial in Odd Fellows cemetery. Mrs Gray, 47, leaves two daughters, a mother Mrs Elizabeth Wiseman, multiple siblings, and was active in the local Methodist church.
Thousands cheered and groaned as 150 convicts were moved from Sing Sing to Auburn by train. A guard shot one inmate when prisoners rushed guards during an attempt to enforce a smoking ban. Warden Clancy expects to finish transfers with few further incidents as soldiers stood ready in Upstate New York.
Col M M Mulhall the N A M lobbyist collapsed during a Senate lobby investigation after nearly three weeks on the stand. He pleaded for mercy as questions focused on expense accounts and alleged payoffs involving Representatives McDermott and McMichael and a woman identified as Lulu Mulhall. The committee adjourned until Monday morning with Mulhall to be released after direct examination.
Washington reports that David Lamar the Wolf of Wall Street will resist any attempt to remove him from the District of Columbia. His attorney Henry David says warrants based on a federal New York indictment will be challenged. Lamar testified to impersonating public men in his Wall Street campaign. The attorney calls travel to New York inconvenient for his client at present.
Mrs Barbara Clough of Sherburne Minn said she and William Henry Lee lived as siblings in boarding houses for 30 years and shared confidences in a platonic friendship. She contends Lee may have left no relatives and planned to seek a portion of the $200000 estate under the laws, while her visit to Chicago aimed to see if measures could curb or prevent that outcome.
In Washington on July 26 Senator Williams of Mississippi predicted the tariff bill would pass the Senate by Aug. 15 and be on the books by Sept. 1. He praised the Democratic majority’s speeding up plan and anticipated only one more general discussion from the minority. Senator Ward wrapped up his remarks on the bill’s impact on coal and industries.
In Jefferson City Missouri on July 26 William Spaugh Jr and Arthur Spaugh ask the board of pardons to free William who is dying of tuberculosis and says he did not shoot Sheriff Polk. Arthur admits killing Polk to save his brother and seeks pity and clemency for both. The physician says William may die within 60 days. Arthur is in early TB and able to work. Their mother Mary E Spaugh pleads for mercy.
Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson brought to President Wilson and Secretary Bryan details on Mexico as the administration moves toward policy formation. Bryan said there is no plan to interrogate Wilson about reports linking him to Madero's fall and Huerta’s rise. Wilson later said mediation plans are "all rot" and favored maintaining order to protect Americans amid widespread banditry. The discussion followed Wilson’s remarks on recognizing Huerta to restore peace and protect lives.
A proposed federal eight hour day for women faced committee review. The Taylor bill targets mills factories and manufactories limiting labor to 8 hours and prohibits railroads and common carriers from accepting interstate shipments of goods produced by overtime labor. Penalties include a $10 000 fine and imprisonment for one year.
