Palmer Rose of 300 N. W. 6th street won second prize of $3.00 in a metered mileage contest sponsored last week by the Washington Motor Company. His average mileage was 32.8 miles per gallon and the winner had an average of 4.4 miles per gallon.
Weekend tragedies across Indiana left at least 16 dead from drownings, auto crashes, murders, and personal crises. An Attica golf course caretaker admitted killing a girl Friday, amid a wave of fatalities including six auto crash deaths and a Jackson County farm accident injury.
Injured this morning when a car overturned near Denver. Mr and Mrs Russell A Cook sustained superficial cuts and bruises with some shock. They are expected to leave hospital tomorrow. The Cooks were traveling west on Road 50 from home to Denver and California. Mr Cook, a member of the symphony orchestra, was journeying with Mrs Cook. the car left the pavement after wheel trouble and was badly damaged.
Attica Ind July 24 state police and Fountain County prosecutors disclosed that Thomas Boyce 26 caretaker at Harrison Hills Country Club confessed to abducting of Elizabeth DeBruicker a 11 year old farm girl. He allegedly ravished strangled and buried her in a gravel pit near the country club with authorities dragging a nearby pond for the murder weapon. A mob gathered outside the county jail as Boyce was moved to Marion county jail for safety and investigators pressed for more witnesses amid grim details of the case.
Members of the Washington Kiwanis Club and their wives will travel to Glendale on Wednesday evening. They will be on the evening's program during the visit.

Prizes in cake show total $6, with classes angel food white butter and chocolate. 4 H score cards used for judging.

Four persons were hurt in a Sunday noon crash near Odon, all taken to Daviess county hospital. The driver, Mrs. Wm Rueter, said the vehicle left the road on a curve between Odon and Burns City, overturned into a ditch and struck a tree. Injuries included a fractured collarbone, facial cuts, and a bruised shoulder among the four, with Mrs Louise McCallian and Miss Rueter among the more seriously hurt. Mrs Rueter, a passenger, was en route home from Indianapolis when the wreck occurred.
Pan American Airway officials announced the Atlantic Clipper was damaged on a return flight from France while landing at Horta in the Azores. None of the eight passengers or crew of 12 was injured, according to Pan American officials.

Washington July 24. Representative Boehne Ind printed in the Congressional Record this week a speech by Paul V. McNutt former Indiana governor. The speech, delivered at the Institute of Public Affairs in Charlottesville Virginia, ran long and Boehne sought a $135 printing cost before House unanimity to publish it at government expense. The McNutt remarks addressed Philippine affairs.

Coroner D W Bell of Pike county rules Irene Royalty 18 of Arthur southern Pike died by accidental drowning after extensive investigation and autopsy findings. The inquest found no marks of violence and state lab results showed no foul play. Two possible causes remain death by own action or accidental drowning with no decisive proof.

Calvin Perkins a 44 year old of 916 Udell street Indianapolis was fined 25 and costs and his drivers license suspended for one year after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated. Arrest followed an early Sunday crash two miles south of Elnora on Road 57 as Perkins rear ended a trailer owned by Carl Kidwell A R 2 of Washington who was traveling with four youths.
Harold Nathaniel Reynolds 21 and Florence Babrick 21 of the city were married by Justice Raney. Hoyt Denver Matteson 23, a city laborer and son of Denver Matteson, also listed in the marriage licenses.

Frank Teed Sr aged 56 former local B and O official died early Sunday in Cincinnati from a heart attack suffered about 1:30 am two hours earlier. He came to Washington in 1912 from Pullman, served as general car foreman and later district master car builder for western lines. Surviving: widow Kate and son Frank Jr of Beloit Wisconsin. Services planned Wednesday at Fuldner Funeral Home in Cincinnati. Washington residents expected to attend. He was a member of Royal Arch Masons Washington Chapter 92 and Washington Elks Lodge.
Hyde Park July 24 Roosevelt and Postmaster General Farley drew political watchers. A noonday deed ceremony signed over the north 12 acres for a future Franklin D. Roosevelt library while Farley stayed as an overnight guest. Rumors swirled about a possible third term stance among Roosevelt, Farley, and campaign circles. Big Jim denied saying conservatives could not back a third term.
