Laverny Farris, aged daughter of Mrs Jap Farris of Washington, eloped with Scott to Lawrenceville and reportedly married. The clash with her parents led to a trespass charge against Scott. Farris denies the marriage, while townspeople discuss the case amid the commotion.
In Battle Creek on July 14 Rev. Oren Van Loom of Berkley Michigan is said to have been drugged and abducted by a man who burned the letters into the minister’s flesh. Dr A L Kingsley attends the pastor as the wife supports the abduction theory.
The Wyremer court today affirmed the indictment against Harry Sinclair, leasee of Tea Pot Deme. Judge Hoehlin rejected Sinclair's motion to quash, stating Congress can compel citizens to answer questions for public welfare. Investigations are in the public interest and witnesses may be compelled.
Mrs. Jane Conalty died at home near Alfordsville from heart trouble before a doctor arrived. She was about 68, survived by four brothers Alfred Webber Floran Webber Charles Webber and three sisters. Five children and one daughter also listed among survivors. Buried at Old Union church with services at her home. Coroner Wood presides. preliminary verdict suggests organic heart death.
The Petersburg Booster Party plans a Washington trip tomorrow morning leaving at 5 30 a m and arriving about 8 00 a m. The visit aims to boost Petersburg and meet business men. They will study public utilities in visiting cities and then proceed to Bicknell Vincennes Princeton and Oakland City.
Obituary notes the death of Fred Taylor at Ravenswood hospital Chicago from stomach cancer. He was son of the late Gov Samuel E Taylor and grew up in Washington. Survived by wife three sisters and a brother. Funeral arrangements not announced. Separately Carlo Scott jailed for trespass and fined 11 dollars total.
William Martin known as the county bootlegger, described as king of bootleggers after numerous liquor law violations, was shot and killed by his brother-in-law Lloyd Clayton during an attempted home intrusion to force his estranged wife to accompany him.
Victor Harris of Montgomery died Saturday morning at his parents home from fulle coniotis arising after an influenza attack. A Washington high school graduate and a gifted musician, he attended the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati a year ago. He leaves parents four brothers Urban Ralph Arthur Ambrose and a sister Mary. Funeral services were held at St Peter church and burial at St Peter cemetery.
Roy Scoble will replace Prof. Dillard as leader of the choir at the Presbyterian church. The organization under Dillard has been among the best in the city and will continue to thrive under Scoble. Scoble plays violin with mastery and possesses a fine tenor voice. Dillard will soon leave for a position in Indianapolis schools.
July 14 Indianapolis reports a crime crusade initiated by Mayor Shank led to arrests of vagrants in pool rooms. A mob hunted a man believed to be a “steal pigeon” and accidentally killed Chris Shick, four, with a pool ball. Police raided stores seeking $200 in guns amid underworld unrest and looters.
The second summer union service on the court house lawn drew a larger crowd than the first. Rev. E. M. Jones preached a sermon titled Lessons From the Transfiguration. Rev. G. J. Grimes led singing with his quartet assisting.
The United States circuit court of appeals dismissed an equity suit against the Pennsylvania Railroad brought by the system federation number 9 and a related suit by the Clerk's union. The court found no proven criminal conspiracy involving the railroad and its officials, including President Samuel Rea.
Miss Nellie Gillatt was pinned beneath a Ford and suffered serious injuries. Miss Joasie Cree Hes and Castle Craney sustained minor cuts and bruises as occupants were pulled from the car. Dr Adolph Gelarden attended Gillatt and other occupants were removed and treated after the collision on East FHL and Van Frees noted as Hopkins and Luanderga drivers. The crash involved two Fords on a bridge and left injuries ranging from serious to minor.
The Ayrshire Coal Company plans a temporary tipple at the field east of the city. The air shafts dug in the mine will be used and the tipple should be in operation within eight weeks with a daily capacity of two hundred tons. Coal encountered during sinking halted progress and will be removed.
