Chicago July reports say railroad signalmen will not join the shopmen strike. D W Helt said negotiations with railroads will begin to settle a wage scale. If talks fail the labor board may grant a retroactive raise to June 1.
President Harding sent to the senate the nomination of James Wilkerson for the U S district court in the northern district of Malinois. He fills the seat left by Judge K M Landis who resigned to devote full time to baseball commissioner duties. Wilkerson formerly headed the forces who prosecuted Governor Len Small for conspiracy to defraud the state. Landis imposed a $25,000,000 fine in the Standard Oil case.
Federal agents seized a large shipment described as grain but identified as real beer. About one hundred barrels were confiscated in South Bend area with eighty two full sized and three half sized barrels stored in the county jail.
The Washington fire department enacts a double platoon schedule with 12 firefighters in use, six per station, three daytime and three night staff, while four new firefighters Roy Ro Smith Owen Mooney Henry Price and Michael Smith join. No fire payroll reductions occur as the change complies with state law.
Relatives in Washington informed today of the death of Mrs Henry Bohnert who was struck by a passenger train in Terre Haute at 730 am. The 66 year old widow of the former Washington police chief died minutes later on the way to hospital. She was crossing the tracks at a street intersection when she stepped onto the railway and was struck by the locomotive. Survived by five children in St Louis and Terre Haute and two sons in Jasonville and East St Louis, she was sister to Mrs Andrew Soeders and Mrs William Dillard. The body will be returned to Washington for burial with funeral plans not yet set.
RE. E. Smoot, a south Meridian street druggist, faced prohibition charges alleging sale of bitters said to intoxicate. The trial before Special Judge C. K. Tharp halted quickly after the state’s evidence. no jury was used and a verdict of acquittal was returned, ending the case without defense evidence.
Frank B. Fornwald Charles B. Serrit Bh Ky Hastings and John T. Harris met state highway officials at Willow Valley to plan a Washington visit. They aim to discuss the north south state highway through Davies County and have secured right of way for the road from here to Pike County. The group seeks a path to avoid the Willow Valley bill.
Joseph Sanders was found not guilty of assault and battery with intent to kill his daughter Emma F. Steen by Justice of the Peace S. P. Sheley. The Steen and Sanders families lived near Rogers station. relocation followed as tensions over a shed being torn for kindling arose.
Roy Richardson and Herbert Gleason surrendered in Dugger after seeking relief from guilt. Their statements name Don Vaught Dennis Livingston Roy White Guy White Ralph Wise and the White brothers as fences and accomplices. The pair describe two roadsters and a full set of burglary tools used in a string of crimes from Elnora to Edwardsport and Dugger.
A drilling rig has arrived on a B. and C. sidetrack near East Third Street in Harrison Township. It will be moved to the Reason Chapman farm southwest of Glendale to sink the first of three holes. Three cars compose the shipment and one load of casing is already unloaded. Drilling to begin once setup is complete.
The city council approved a $15,000 temporary loan to bridge finances through early next year, the second such loan this year after a $10,000 posting was paid. June receipts totaled $33,653 with a balance of $20,269.46 on hand, though funds have since drawn down amid water rentals and other payments. The government moves to address nationwide industrial strife as coal and rail strikes intensify. President Harding is expected to issue a firm statement against mail interference and violence, while rail lines face troop protection and service suspensions amid disruptions across multiple states.
J J McNamara paint foreman at Baltimore and Ohio shops was severely injured in Vincennes early this morning. A ladder slipped while he leaned it against a cough as an engine moved toward a water tank, causing him to fall. He suffered a fractured thigh, a broken leg, and a broken forearm, with minor head bruises. He was taken to Good Samaritan hospital. His wife was notified. He has worked for B and O for thirty years.
Shots fired late at night from National Guard companies encamped in Bloomington prompted Sheriff Morrison to state there was no change in the situation. He said the strikers are bitter toward the guards but the area remains quiet as authorities plan to continue patrols until tensions ease.
Washington reports say the Baltimore and Ohio railroad won a federal injunction in East St Louis halting striking Illinois shop workers from interfering with trains or shop operations. The order, effective at 11 this morning, covers all Illinois employees. Reports also say four Flora area arrests occurred days ago of a chief clerk, with the detainees posting $500 bonds and being released. Local freight trains from Flora resumed after a one day layoff as schedules remained erratic. Six new local shop workers were reportedly hired. Also noted were crime and transport mentions: a Mexico City auction for stolen cars and Danzig population figures, plus France Italy and England to attend the French Grand Prix at Strasbourg on July 15.
In Ft Wayne Indiana Joseph Colali was killed by an electric current from a knife switch at the Wabash shops. New Franklin Missouri reports nearly 200 troops sent to avert clashes between strikers and strike breakers. Buffalo New York sees rioting and a shootout as shopmen strike violence continues.
At a crossing near Butler Indiana the first section of the Twentieth Century Limited struck a Cleveland tourists auto killing Rosa Berzak 15 Benjamin Berzak her brother and Bardella Morris the driver. Mrs Fischbeck Henry Kniptash and son Lester were badly injured in another incident at Kendallville Indiana.
Morristown New Jersey July 11 Evidence in the trial of 15 year old Francis Kluxen includes blood stained shoes and trousers from his home linked to the murder of 11 year old Jeanette Lawrence. The body was found stabbed twenty times in nearby woods. The state’s first witness testified the garments soaked in park water. The courtroom held hundreds of onlookers as the youth remained calm and told his lawyer there is no need to worry.
