Hamersly Gives Rote Program At Rotary Club Meeting

Hamersly presented a rote program at the Rotary Club meeting in Tanya with Lew Burris and Ike Conley as captains of rival teams. Arthur Allen acted as judge and John Hastings as timekeeper. Burris team won several points aided by clever responses from Paul Eli and Tony Risch. Guests included Matthews and Max Shirite of Vincennes Rotary.

Brant Estate Is Divided By Will Bequest Totals

The late Lial B. Brant died recently in Attica. His July 2 1938 will bequeaths five dollar gifts to cousins Edna Delf Leliah Eckert Zara Evang Arthur Brant of Attica and others. Remainder left to aunts G. H. Porter and Mary Harden with Mildred Hart Keys receiving a growing life bequest. Executors are Dr A C Cen tral National and Company at Attica.

Gaumy Neal Speakers On Football At Kiwanis Meeting

DePauw University coach Gaumy Neal spoke at the Washington Kiwanis Club about football as a premier sport. He stressed schooling first and athletics second, praised wide equipment and training for players, and noted opportunities must not compromise academics. Paul Sims received the Kiwanis ball award and will attend DePauw next year.

Farm Institute Draws Large Crowd At Elnora High

A well attended farmers institute was held yesterday at the Elnora high School with speakers Mrs Essie Fuller of Sullivan county and Sam B Stout of Henry county. Topics covered included Time Saving Tips The Humor and Pathos of Everyday Life Opportunities of Youth and Hybrid Corn. Community singing and musical numbers by students plus a bountiful meal preceded exhibits of corn and eggs with trophies awarded for top entries. George Bechtel won the grand prize for the corn and egg classes.

Former Resident Marion Chandler Dies in California

A former Hyatt Station resident, Marion Chandler aged 80, died Saturday in Woodland California after a long illness. Funeral services will be in Woodland. He was a brother of the late John W Chandler of El Paso and the late Robert Chandler. Survived by wife Nora Cunningham Chandler daughter Ray Chandler and sisters Mrs Mac Twitty of Indianapolis and Mrs Hulda Elliott of North Vernon.

Henry Walker Funeral Service Held at United Brethren Church

Mayo Gullett Serves Aboard Omaha In Spain Evacuation

Lieut Mayo Gullett son of Mr and Mrs Frank Gullett of East Main street is on duty on the U S Cruiser Omaha flagship of the Mediterranean squadron. The ship assists in evacuating Americans from Barcelona amid the strife torn Spain.

Austin Ash Fined and Sentenced for Public Intoxication

Austin Ash, 24, of the city, charged with public intoxication, pleaded guilty this morning before Mayor Hugh L. Cox. He was fined $1 and costs and sentenced to 30 days on the state penal farm.

Mrs. Elizabeth Cogan, 80, sister of John Kehoe of Washington, died Wednesday at her home in Vingenes. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 o clock in the Old Cathedral.

Wheatland resident Mrs Sarah Johnson died last night near Bicknell after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Surviving are four sons and one daughter.

Mackey Bank Robbery By Bandits Reported In Indiana

Three bandits robbed Mackey Bank today in Buckskin Indiana injuring no one. Police searched southeastern Indiana for the suspects after a dark colored 1938 Chevrolet coach and a Buick were found abandoned with Illinois and Indiana plates. One suspect described as 30 to 35 years old with khaki clothing and tall, light hair. the other 30 to 35 with dark hair and blue overcoat. Victor Lemme, 65, cashier, was forced to lie on the floor as robbers manhandled the line and ripped telephone wires. The thieves allegedly changed cars near the intersection of roads 57 and 68 to evade pursuit.

In Vincennes Indiana on January 26 Mrs Elza Hager a 26 year old Bruceville homemaker was critically burned when her clothing caught fire as she warmed near a bed Her two children slept nearby and Mrs Spees was alone in a dressing room when the dress ignited She fled screaming to a sheltered porch and received medical care with a slim chance of recovery
