Mary Courtney aged 93 widow of John Courtney died at 6 a m at the rural home of her son Fred Courtney five miles north of Odon Martin county Indiana after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Kiwanis Club of Washington plans its weekly meeting at the Blue Bird Cafe Wednesday evening with Gaumy Neal, football coach at University Greencaste, as principal speaker. Russell Alexander, ex Washington resident and head of publicity at DePauw, will attend with films for club benefit. Members may invite a guest by notifying club officials.
The Daviess County Codton Hunters Association met Monday night at the Skeet Club electing permanent officers for the coming year. President William Selby, Vice-president Kenneth Sutherland, Secretary Everett Bresh, and Treasurer Elbert Yarbrough were chosen. Talks were given by Elme Wiltrout and Claude Bennett.
Justice Ernest L. Raney presided as Jesse Voyles received a dollar plus costs for a missing tail light, George W. O’Neill was fined one dollar and costs for improper car lights, and Martin F. Fuhrman paid one dollar and costs for unclear clearance lights on a truck.
Firefighters responded to Darrell Graber's residence at 105 Harned Avenue around 9:35 this morning for a stove fire. Minor damage was reported with no injuries.
Services were held today in Indianapolis for Michael R. Sorgius 77 formerly of this city. Survived by widow Anna and two children Mrs George D and Williard R Sorgius.
Plainville Indiana January 24 a two story country residence belonging to Mr and Mrs John Truelove east of Plainville in Steele township was destroyed by fire early Monday evening. The home owned by James L Dougherty of Washington was insured as was the Truelove furnishings. The couple left for church shortly before 6 pm and the fire was discovered about half an hour later by Truelove's sister who lives with their parents. Firemen limited the blaze to furniture removal.
Indianapolis January 24 A bid in the Indiana General Assembly to bring former Klan leader and life prisoner D C Stephenson before the house failed 73 votes to 24 The resolution urged Stephenson to tell all about his past political dealings and alleged conspiracy Critics argued Stephenson was treated by questionable jurors and judges and that the legislature has no authority to commute his sentence Stephenson has served over 13 years in the Indiana State Penitentiary for the murder of Miss Madge Oberholtzer The measure was introduced by Democrat Rep Joseph Klein of Gary and faced opposition from both parties as debate highlighted claims of injustice and calls for fair play
A Martin County Indiana example shows 30,000 acres retired from farming on the high divide between the Wabash River and its East Fork. The land removal ends maintenance of seventy miles of road, closes ten one room schools, and recovers $14,000 in delinquent taxes while providing better schooling for remaining pupils at no cost.
Slippery streets late yesterday led to several auto accidents in Washington police reports. Two women were injured in one crash on E Fourth Street when a light coupe traveling south collided head on with a truck driven by Roy Purcell of Vincennes. Mrs Nellie Bower of Dewey Avenue suffered two broken limbs and a sprained wrist. Mrs Eximund Fulcher, a passenger, received a forehead bruise requiring stitches. The pickup or truck was damaged, and the light coupe sustained extensive front-end damage. The incident occurred about 4 45 PM.
City council met Monday night to study the annual clerk treasurer report and bids. The board will review bids by type, discuss a city funds depository, and later award contracts.
