Oil and gas lease activity rises in Daviess County with over 50 new papers on file at the county recorder. Most leases cover land east and south of Washington as a survey group from a firm arrives, spurring additional bids and prospects in the field.
Pawl Hovis, 22, of Dover Hill, a timber cutter, was rushed to Daviess County hospital after an axe struck his right foot. A severed bone and two tendons behind the big toe required surgical attention. The condition is painful but not serious.
Richard Williams nine months old son of Earl Williams of Plainville was bitten by a dog being fed in the home late Wednesday evening. The child sustained facial wounds requiring four stitches to eyelid forehead lip and jaw though the physician believed sight was not affected.
Louis Emil Burris of Sannelburg remains in serious condition after a fall at the Enkoff mine this week. He suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries in the mishap and is listed as serious this afternoon.
Homer Trowbridge leads the second aid class now to meet at the west end fire station instead of city hall. Tonight is the final enrollment night for the class.
New York police charged Louis Greenfield 42 with homicide after he chloroformed his 17 year old son Jerry in their apartment. Greenfield said he killed due to the boy being feeble minded. He reportedly pressed a cloth soaked with chloroform over the youth's face until movements ceased.
Colonel Jacob Ruppert longtime owner of the Yankee baseball club died in New York on January 13 after months of illness at his Fifth Avenue residence He was 71 He had been in a semi coma after his condition worsened Tuesday night and doctors had given up hope for recovery.
Mary Sue Holland seven and Marilyn Woodruff, neighbor girl, were injured when a truck struck a car and two girls were thrown onto the pavement on Road 57 south of Rogers Station. Mary Sue Holland sustained a severe chin and jaw injuries with fractures. Marilyn Woodruff had minor cuts.
The $2,500 damages suit filed by Bernard Livers against William Potter, a Loogootee high school basketball trip bus driver, has been moved from Martin to Daviess County circuit court for trial. Livers, a student and basketball player, was among passengers on a November return trip when the bus wrecked on a county road, resulting in head injuries and multiple fractures.
Indianapolis reports a change in the state basketball tournament format with North and South regions recognized. The revised 16 team finals begin March 25 at Butler Field House, with Hammond reportedly passed over. Muncie and Indianapolis assignments outlined for the four regional sites.

Charges of public intoxication were placed against two men in city court this morning after a disturbance at Kidwell restaurant on West Walnut street. Roy Chastain, 33, pleaded guilty and was fined $1 and costs plus a 60 day penal farm term. Louis Elmmiore, 36, pleaded not guilty and asked for witnesses, claiming he had just met Chastain and was not intoxicated.
William C Hyatt longtime trustee of Washington township died at about 2 30 in the afternoon at his home on East Walnut City and county officials attribute the death to heart disease and complications. Further details will follow tomorrow by The Rat.
In Washington on January 13 a 4.3 billion program for railroad revival was introduced by Rep. Charles Lea of California. The bill proposes consolidating land, water, and air transport, makes the Interstate Commerce Commission a super rate making body, and reorganizes the commission. Walter M. W. wn of the ICC will be called before the committee next Tuesday as hearings begin.
Indianapolis Jan 13 Investigating charges that materials and labor from outside Indiana were used in an 11 million construction program at state institutions under the Roosevelt priming plan, the probe began in the general assembly. The house resolution, sponsored by Republicans Evans and Hoover, was adopted unanimously by Democrats and backed as a move to beat Republicans to the punch. Hoover cited many complaints about out of state labor and law used in the projects.
In San Francisco at Alcatraz Island a breakout attempt by Arthur Doc Barker and four others failed after guards sprayed bullets. Barker was shot in head and leg and may die. Other plotters included Dale Stamphill, Rufus McCain, Henry Young, and William Martin. Karpis did not participate.
News Service reports President Roosevelt backs a greatly expanded air force as a core of the national defense program. The Army Air Force would include about 000, 50,000 officers, and a large enlisted force, with a reserve and guard component totaling roughly 650,000. The expansion hinges on three factors: a vastly larger air force, a strengthened standing army, and a heightened reserve and national guard presence.
Two levee workers, Lakas and Phan Davis, received severe electrical burns when an excavator they operated touched high voltage wires. They were taken to a local hospital with the seriousness of the burns not yet determined.
