Legionaires of Washington busily register World War veterans at the courthouse for possible future service in national defense. By noon more than 50 veterans had registered with many others awaiting the final set for this work.
Indiana lawmakers pressed to lengthen Saturday sessions in a bid to prevent a bill jam as Wendell Willkie, the 1940 GOP candidate, declined an invitation to address the assembly citing fatigue. The Senate and House approved several measures and sent others to the governor while a Saturday session drew a crowded chamber.
Reliance will start initial parachute production at its Washington factory next week. Women from the area and visiting experts will train locals in parachute cotton work as painting sewing and assembling areas are prepared. First chutes expected to Army by mid March with over 200 per week output once full plant is active. Testing needs airport access. without it the firm would ship parts for tests elsewhere risking higher costs. Local officials anticipate airport approval could bring thousands in annual savings and create 15 to 20 new jobs.
