An Oakland fire killed eight people and injured several as a house fire swept through a crowded building. Authorities feared more victims inside as a thousand residents were moved from nearby structures. Firefighters battled the blaze with twenty companies and volunteers, while authorities identified one victim.

Washington reports on former Chief Justice William Howard Taft's health were denied by Taft veterans who said he had a good night and was slightly better in the morning. A noon statement from Thomas A and Hagner said he had no right to be alarmed and the previous day's newspaper alarm was unjustified.
Princeton, Feb 22 The GI county grand jury convened as Judge Claude A. Smith ordered a meeting next Monday to pursue an inquiry into the death of Carl Samp of Owensville. Samp's body was found in a chicken yard last month, and the major investigation is expected to focus on this case with officials continuing procedures yesterday.
New London Conn Feb 22 Coast Guard destroyer and its tender seized a rum runner and its contact boat after a warning from Commander L T Chalker, base commander. The fone vessel was said to have engaged before capture.
Bloomington funeral today for Robert W. Sol 42 a former county representative and Monroe judge who served two terms as district attorney in Martinsville and died after service in Cos County.
Sarah Myers, 72, living east of Odon, died this morning after a five year illness. She was born in Davies County on April 19, 1867, daughter of Andrew and Margaret Ledg erwood York. She married on March 14, 1875, and was preceded in death by her husband. She was a member of the Olive Church.
Mrs. Alice Colvit of 4 Sixth Street guttered tet of her shoulder following a fall last night. The incident left her with a shoulder injury and under medical observation.
Philip Miller of four miles east of Odon died after a three week illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at Olive Baptist Church with burial in the local cemetery. Born March 5, 1862 in Green county, he was the son of John and Betty Ann Miller and married Minerva Miller on March 8, 1835. Surviving children include William Miller of Brazil and Mrs. Aite.
Vincennes Indiana February Mrs Beth Carter believed to be Knox county's only centenarian died here today aged 100. She was born in and lived her life in Vincennes and was known for long residence in the community. Her passing marks the loss of a century member of local society.
Seven miles of Chicago and Eastern Illinois railroad tracks along the Wabash river north of Vincennes will be elevated 24 to 30 inches above the present roadbed. C. A. Hartman, company official, announced the plan to safeguard railroad property from future floods. The project, expected to take five to six months, will employ about 50 workers and follow a flood loss estimate of 133000 by the Wabash Mamee Valley improvement association.

Gary Indiana February 22 The Gary Post-Tribune announced it possessed on February 18 information detailing two official drawings on the aide of the Indiana high school athletics Gardiner Meade and Ray Stevens of Wayne Michigan visiting relatives here.
New York dated Feb 22 The New York Times states the Baltimore and Ohio railroad is prepared to accept the interstate commerce commission consolidation plans. This marks the first complete acquiescence by a railroad to the proposal made last December. The B and O plans to file a new merger petition in line with the commission plan, omitting certain elements involving Wabash and the Ann.
