A night intrusion led an unknown adult to enter the opera house and set a blaze that destroyed about 4,000 feet of film. The incident appears to reflect a biased act as the Ku Klux Klan imagery was found among the burned materials. Police are investigating possible motives and suspects.
A disturbed patron set fire to burning celluloid at the opera house after a show, destroying two double reels of The Birth of a Nation and nearly burning the theater. He gained entry via the operating booth, removed film from a magazine, and fled through the alley door. Police suspect a calculated act by a stranger seeking to halt screenings. manager had backup reels and the afternoon performance proceeded.
LWES OF TWO at AMERIGANS ENDANGERED Lonnen, Fev 20. The Ameri vans were survivors of the Nearwegian steamer Dolvelie sun by, shell five of a German eebmaring and not picked up until they had suffered from exposure on the open sea for thirteen hours. The Norwegian embassy made the announcement today. Making More Arrest, Todianapolis, Ind, Feb. 20. United Press reports General Frederick Funston will be buried in San Francisco Bay area national cemetery at the Presidio with military ceremonies involving troops from nearby posts. Mrs Funston is prostrated at home. a daughter remains in hospital and family members attend ongoing arrangements.
Washington business representatives and citizens are urged to attend a city hall gathering to discuss civic organization for Washington, Indiana, and Daviess County. A Cincinnati speaker is expected, with a representative from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to discuss city organizations and potential achievements.
In New York on February 20 a market riot across Laing Inland and Teller Hil left carts wrecked and dealers behind locked doors. Police battled to restore order as women fought for potatoes and onions. Brownsville and East Side areas saw similar disturbances with peddlers fleeing amid chaos.
Captain Ensor of Brooklyn declares the American steamer Housatonic was sunk by a German submarine off the American coast last October. He spoke on his arrival in New York on February 20 asserting the submarine torpedoed and claimed the vessel.
In Des Moines, the Iowa Senate adopted resolutions charging the War Department with attempting to disrupt the national guard by February orders requiring members of the third Iowa infantry to pay for their uniforms. The action followed a morning of debate and was approved unanimously.
The senate today approved a measure linked to public franchise surrender and tax fund handling. The proposal would require money collected by estate officers or corporations to be deposited in the treasury within thirty days, with expenses drawn only on governor approval. The body also passed a bill to require public utilities to surrender total franchises and operate under two year permits issued by the public service commission.
Amsterdam reports Ambassador Penfield in Vienna asked Austro-Hungarian authorities about their stance on unrestricted submarine warfare. The capital’s dispatches stated Austria had not withdrawn its assurances in the Ancona and Persia submarine incidents. Berlin described renewed government denials of British claims.
United Press reports on February 20 in Washington that Secretary Lansing and Assistant Attorney General Warren appeared before the Senate judiciary committee to seek legislation authorizing the president to use armed forces to enforce obligations under various logations and statutes. The effort aimed to broaden neutrality and espionage measures, with the cabinet members presenting four of eighteen drafts for the bill and noting additional related objects.
Gen. Funston, veteran of border duty and a leading U S commander, died suddenly after dinner at a hotel in Des Moines. He had recently returned from an inspection trip and had long carried heavy duties across the Mexican border. The department was notified, and arrangements for funeral are undecided.
About twenty three American duck hunters were seized in Sonora by two Mexicans in soldiers uniforms who looted $560 in cash two shotguns and a rifle and threatened the men with death. Col Richard H. Wilson of the Fourteenth United States Infantry reported the incident as Capt John B. Shuman prepared a full investigation. Those held included Charles Ackenany and his brother John Ackenaurpf Somertdd Ariz and a Mr McMillan of El Centro Cal.
Washington Feb 20 United Press says America's real danger of an actual clash with Germany cannot be removed until the Kaisers government revokes its decree for submarine warfare. The statement came from the highest authority today amid scant signs of deescalation as war threats persist.

Mrs Carrie EB Allen of Van Allen died at Daviess county hospital after a gallbladder operation. Ill for six weeks she underwent surgery last Thursday. Born October 34 1867 she married Van Allen and had seven children five survive with husband. Survivors include Malis Bateman and Steph Gay plus Will Allen and Georges Allen. One brother John and one sister Edna deceased.
