Senator Johnson of California declares in a Washington speech that railroads should be owned by the government after the war. He attacks current compensation for railroad owners and calls for nationalized lines with a central directing power. He warns politics would harm management under private ownership.
Berlin reports that German forces have entered Dvinsk on the Drung river about one hundred miles southeast of Riga with little resistance. The Russians allegedly attempted to blow a bridge over the Dvning river as part of a broader push in the area.
Andianapolis reports Will H. Hays began his duties as national chairman by inviting all former GOP chairs to a New York meeting next Monday night. He plans to convene with Roosevelt Taft and Hughes ally Charles Styans Hughes while outlining party strategy amid recovering tin production since 1902.
In Ohia on February 1, a man killed his wife and their seven year old daughter before taking his own life at home. Neighbors say he had a troubled history and a heated argument preceded the tragedy. Police recovered the bodies and are investigating the sequence of events.
A three story frame Bedford hotel building was burned early Monday. The loss is $12,000 largely insured. The fire started on an upper floor and the building was owned by C. B. Norton while the hotel was run by Dick Martin.

Cosmopolitan crowd gathers at a New York funeral for aviator Vernon Castle. Mourners include members of the Royal Flying Corps in khaki and civilians, with Mrs. Castle in deep mourning as the ceremony honors his wartime sacrifice.
Chicago on February 19 Nelson Morris testified in the packing house wages probe that $1288 annually is far more than needed for a family of five. He said the figure would provide plenty and is excessive for average living costs.
Enos Day, 28, a retired farmer, died this morning at the home of his daughter Mrs Willis Lents, 3396 North West Eleventh Street. Paralysis caused his death. Burial is planned for Thursday at 1:80 PM from the Lents residence, with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mayne N J Feb 19 three men were slightly burned early in a blast that destroyed four buildings in Wayne County. Fire crews battled the flames as neighbors reported loud explosions and smoke blanketed the town. No further injuries were reported and investigators began perimeters to determine the cause.
