Washington reports a two billion dollar Stabilization Fund appeal aiming to shield the American dollar from foreign manipulation and preserve the country’s foreign trade from potential disruption.
Davie Orr aged 16 and Arthur Jore aged 17, both residents of the city, were seen getting off a freight train near Mitchell. Police contacted the youths’ parents, who then retrieved them in Mitchell. The Democrat states the incident was not unusual for youths and aims to correct any misleading impression from police actions.
Dr Jerome L DeMotte of Odon was the principal speaker at the Rotary meeting at the Elks home at noon. He reviewed early history of Odon and Daviess county in relation to Northwest Territory history. Twenty three Rotarians planned to attend the district conference on February 22 at French Lick with Frank Vonderschmitt and Leonard Bartlett elected delegates and Charles Gill Jr and Leslie Hamersly as alternates.

Wilfred Hetzel, claiming the world championship for trick shots, will perform before the Hatchet Huntingburg game Friday at the community gym. The former Minnesota player is touring Indiana en route to Hollywood, saying his act is the greatest trick shot show in basketball history.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Killion Sr of Plainville and William G Littell with son Eddie of Washington travel Sunday to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Mr Killion will receive medical treatment while Eddie Littell undergoes an operation.
Bud Johnson of Graham Stores sustained minor leg injuries when several bales of shingles fell and struck him last evening. He was able to move about today with the aid of a cane.
Doyle Kays III of 612 Lincoln street is confined to his home this week due to influenza illness.
John Pate of Loogootee rises in Bell Telephone Company ranks to assistant superintendent of his division. He previously worked in Pontiac Michigan and Traverse Michigan before relocating with his wife and young son.
Dismissal of classes in all St. Simon parish schools due to influenza began this morning and will resume next Monday if the illness abates. About 20 percent of St Simons pupils were absent with higher rates in public schools totaling 371 absent by noon. Absentee counts listed by school included Walnut street 45 West End 51 South Side 41 High school 234. The outbreak affects children most, but some adults are ill. The epidemic mirrors trends in Indiana and nearby states as frigid weather persists.
Washington Feb 16 The House approved a 376 million arms bill signaling strong support for U S rearmament. The measure authorizes 5500 air force planes, adding 40340 army personnel, funds a 27 million canal defenses program and 34 5 million for private industry orders. Speaker Rayburn urged swift action, saying U S safety hinges on readiness as Europe grows more volatile.
In London it was learned the Spanish government under Negrin plans a proclamation by Manuel Azana to urge resistance to General Franco. The message, aimed at areas still under Republican control, will call for unity and direct action, signaling a push to reconcile Allied efforts with Spain’s civil conflict.
The Frisco Sunnyland passenger train crashed head-on with a freight near Quincy Mississippi killing two crewmen, engineer George Bower of Birmingham Alabama and porter Laddie Ivy, injuring several. Rev Israel H Noe among the injured. another Sunnyland wreck had occurred nearby in 1923 with twenty deaths.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to design a national energy resources policy to conserve coal oil gas and water power and warned that resources are not inexhaustible. He stressed their importance in national defense and noted ongoing waste in use and production by the federal government.
Indianapolis February 16. Rep Guy W Dausman Republican of Goshen introduced a bill to replace the existing gross income tax with a net income tax. The plan would set a 3 percent tax on corporate net income and 1 percent on individual net income over $1000, aiming to raise more than the current 20 900 000 annual revenue.
Washington reports President Roosevelt will defer naming a successor to retired Justice Louis E. Brandeis until his Caribbean cruise ends March 4. The ailing president, resting after grippe, plans cabinet meetings and will host explorer Richard E. Byrd for lunch. Secretary Marvin McIntyre assisted with temporary offices in Miami.

Lyle Clark, longtime superintendent at Vincennes Packing Corp local factory, announces acceptance of a position with Haxton Canning Co in Oakfield New York. He will begin duties next month and will receive training in the companys new lines. After a year, he will be transferred from Oakfield. Vera Truelove and John D Newland wedding at St Simons with Miss Mat Newland returning home for the ceremony.
A national savings and loan institute plans a meeting with 300 to 400 executives and staff from across the nation. Speakers include Dr Hoagland of Ohio State University and F Bills. representatives from the Washington and Vincennabit clubs will attend in Indianapolis.
Washington February 16 Senator King Democrat of Utah said he would not be adverse to an inland drive to renee for the I land a totas for drive.
Samuel Pierce, 69, of Bedford, confessed to first degree murder in the ambush slaying of Earl Roach, 41, near Avoca Indiana. Pierce and his son Ray, 27, were arrested after Roach’s body was found by WPA workers. Pierce was brought to Indianapolis for a lie detector test before charges were filed.
Indianapolis detectives announce William Ray Butsch, a middle aged former convict, is tied to the January 17 killing of 55 year old Sarah Selah Romig. Prosecutors plan charges soon. butsch denies any involvement and demands constitutional rights in the face of investigation.
Royse Houk, a Bicknell teacher who leads American Expressvacations tours, spoke to Kiwanis Cub members about his European travels. He described life on the Isle of Marcum in Holland, islanders marriage customs and tuberculosis concerns, and noted the King of England’s guarded jewelry reportedly valued at about 10 million. He also shared observations from Germany and other tour stops.
