Additional questionnaires were mailed out by the county selective service board to reach the March quota. The total mailed today brings the local total to 350 with more to come before the quota is met. The February quota of six draftees will depart Washington on February 26. The March departure date is not yet announced.
Two judgments by default in local damage suits were entered today in Daviess circuit court by Judge Frank E. Gilligan. The cases named Man Underhill who received 750 dollars and Paul LaVelle who received 600 dollars for personal injuries from an accident with Gertrude Lane of Ypsilanti Michigan as defendant.
The Knights of Columbus will meet tonight at 8 at the lodge hall to discuss Diesel engines led by Ester J. Clark. Clark, a local man, is chief mechanic on a Diesel streamlined train running between Chicago and Pittsburgh.
Stricken with a heart attack Sunday evening while visiting in the home of Mr and Mrs W L Johnson of Winslow. Harry Heathman manager of the Pike county auto license bureau was taken to the local hospital for treatment. Improved after observation he remains serious.
A coal mine accident near Pet left Miley with a broken back after a slate fall. Hospital reports today say his condition is serious but life is not in danger. Miley, a World War veteran, was well known around Pike County and is to be placed in a cast.
Local police continued their inquiry into an attempted safe cracking at the Igleheart Mill on Saturday. The burglars did not gain entry as the combination was off, but a cigarette may have caused a fire that burned a floor hole before it was put out.
An appellate court appeal is indicated to challenge the circuit court ruling along with a motion for a new trial. The action seeks to overturn the original decision and secure retrial based on the cited grounds.
The Daviess County Shorthorn Association will meet Thursday at 1:30 at the house. Members are asked to enter gold medal calf entries. Officers' son will speak at the meeting.
Monica Grider Love aged 21 wife of Ervin R Love of Cannelburg Indiana died after a brief illness. Born September 1 1919 she was daughter of James G Grider and Mais A Sharum. Survived by husband Ervin two sons James Sim and Cary Ervin at home and sister Mrs Bernard Fields of Washington and father James B Grider of Evansville. Funeral at All Saints Catholic Church Cannelburg with burial at local cemetery. Paul Emil Norris & Sons funeral directors in charge.

Philadelphia February 11 four people were killed as a gas blast ripped through two adjoining dwellings in South Philadelphia and ignited a three alarm fire.

The Loyal Order of the Moose met in the lodge room and planned a booster meeting for Sunday February 16 at 2 pm. New members will be initiated, including visitors from other lodges, with a chicken dinner and dancing to follow. Mrs Margaret Kane 67 widow of Frank Kane died at 650 this morning after a two month illness at Daviess County Hospital. A lifelong Daviess County resident born September 7 1873 in Harrison Township she belonged to St Patrick Church and its Altar Society. Funeral set for Thursday at 9 at St Patrick with burial in the adjacent cemetery. body returned to Reeves Township near Corning. The Wellington Country Club directors met last night to organize for the coming year and appoint committees. The course is in the best shape in years with lighter prospects for improvement. Bridges have been repaired and new plank covers added. No. 7 green has been reseeded and was in use last fall. No. 8 green was completed and will open with the season. Previous improvements were completed last fall to amend the dam for the coming year.
American and British authorities tentatively agreed on new fighter aircraft and cannon. Officials said production will equip these planes with a 20 diameter cannon capable of shooting down heavy enemy bombers. Conferences between U S and British leaders and industry representatives resulted in an accord to standardize cannon use for most fighters.
William Edward Kelly, a fisherman living near Veale Top by the east fork, died at 6 o clock Monday in Daviess County after a brief serious illness. He was born May at Greencastle and was a widower. Dr. T. Charles San will chair the annual Boy Scout drive to fund scouting in the White River Council. The campaign runs February 18 through March 4 with West Fork district officers coordinating canvass work. Headquarters will open and a general assembly is set for March 4. District officers include Arthur W. Allen, George T. Hitchcock, Arthur Fo, Phil Waller, and T. Charles Smey, serving as key leaders.

Indianapolis February 11 Reliance Mfg Co has filed a petition with the U S circuit court of appeals in Chicago to set aside an NLRB order. The firm operates plants in Michigan City Washington Kokomo Bedford Seymour Columbus Mitchell Indiana and Huntington West Virginia and Tyrone Pennsylvania. The case centers on the NLRB order issued last January requiring withdrawal of recognized labor organizations amid internal plant disputes.
