A boy named Leighty at a stone quarry near Petersburg Indiana received severe burns when a spark ignited one third full of blasting powder. He rolled on the ground to extinguish flames, was tended by physicians, and neighbors later took him home as his companions fled in fright.
Indianapolis February report outlines an unusual legal tangle over selecting a judge for Earl Klingk of Evansville. Lesh, Wi et Lesh, noted former pier figure, was chosen amid defense objections asso a judge. Judge James A. Collins ordered William Kiser to handle the defense’s chiding and struck Homer Elst Rommer from consideration, with Bernard Orby an ab attorney involved. United States district attorney presided over the matter.
The Indiana state highway department reports traffic delays on Road No. 50 near Medora and between Bedford due to high White River water. The river is also high on Road No. 67 near Gosport causing detours and dewuried traffic.
W A Foster of Fairfield recalls Washington days as a telegraph operator for the old O and M railway noting the 1871 shift from broad gauge to standard gauge. He describes five foot ten inch prior tracks and a half day change aided by section crews, then lists local agents and depot staff including J R Clark E G Bondurant W Chadwick Frank Bothwell and John Doherty.
John E. Fredrick of Kokomo Indiana, longtime president of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor. He says the move aims to redeem the state from its present deplorable condition.
Hadisah Ewe and Frank Holt report to the Board of Visitors that 1700 freshmen are not expected to return next fall. They are excused from reenrollment due to inability to meet academic standards or belief the campus would be a glorified playground. If 1700 do not return, fewer than half of the original class will advance to sophomore status.
Indianapolis February 7 The statute of limitations in Indiana's criminal code will be the focal point in Governor Ed Jackson's bribery trial set to open within twenty four hours The state accuses Jackson of attempting to bribe former Governor Warren T McCray four years ago and of concealing the act while threatening parole secrecy to ensure it remained hidden
King George announced in his throne speech that Britain will study a new British American arbitration treaty. The draft, communicated by President Coolidge on December 26, aims to replace the Root Treaty and will be considered in coordination with dominion governments.
Indianapolis February 7 Farmers nationwide push for adequate legislation to curb seasonable and export surpluses. Indiana Farm Bureau president Wm H Settle says voices are heard in Washington as he returns from days in the capital advocating the McNary Haugen farm relief bill.
Rockville Conn Feb 7 Justice of the peace Carl Goehring of Ellington announced he had married Miss Beatrice Fuller White and her mulatto sweetheart Clarence Kellem. The ceremony was performed at Kellem's home here early today and the couple left secretly for Philadelphia immediately afterward.
Leo Artusi of South Bend was sentenced to two years in Leavenworth for conspiracy to violate the national prohibition law. Federal Judge Thomas W. Slick imposed the term after Artusi pleaded guilty to operation of a $50,000 sugar alcohol scheme.
In Mexico during early February heavy clashes between rebels and federal troops across four states left eighteen rebels dead after an assault on the town of Salmanca Guanajuato following interference with communications above Irapuato.
Roman Catholic Archbishop F W Keating head of the Liverpool diocese died today after a brief illness. The death leaves the diocese to mourn the loss of its senior church leader.
Indianapolis Feb 7 A K Trester secretary of the state association announced after an inspection tour that a section of Butler University's new field house at Fairview would host the final games of the Indiana high school basketball tournament on Friday and Saturday March 16 and 17. He expressed satisfaction the plant would be completed in time for the state finals.
A Senate library committee hearing was set for today to hear supporters of the proposed 1.75 million George Rogers Clark Memorial in Vincennes. Proponents urged the Senate to pass the measure without cuts, noting the House plans to reduce the funding.
Chicago February 7 The sub committee of the joint wage scale panel for Illinois coal operators and miners failed to reach any agreement on wage conditions in bituminous fields. The full committee met briefly after the report and adjourned. Operators and miners planned separate sessions to study the findings with another joint meeting slated for tomorrow morning. The scale committee has until April 1 to settle the wage issue.
Daniel B. Pritchett, 78, longtime Washington resident, died at his Los Angeles home last Monday. A former Baltimore and Ohio railroad fireman, he also served on the Ohio and Mississippi before the Eads Bridge era. Funeral services will be held in Los Angeles, with surviving widow Mabel and four sons in Los Angeles, Chicago, and elsewhere.
Funeral services for Mrs Sally Montgomery will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Maysville Methodist Church with interment to follow in Oak Grove.
M Clayde Sullivan known on air as Harmonica Mike, claims to have entertained listeners for thirteen years and to have appeared on over 412 stations across Europe and America.
The White River surged Sunday beginning about 5 am, rising rapidly to peak around 11 percent inches per hour. Reports from Edwardsport say water stood 1.1 feet above stage with trucks aiding motorists on a closing road near Rockford as late Sunday afternoon.
South Bend Ind Feb 7 Subpoenaed as a government witness in a federal liquor case against three Hamlet residents Anthony Vendle a local farmer was jailed on a liquor charge by order of Judge Thomas W Slick and posted $5 000 bond. Charlotte and husband pleaded guilty to supplying liquor to two federal agents saying the liquor came from Vendle.
Decatur Indiana February reports indicate Attorney General Arthur Gilliam was not indicted on charges of violating the state spending law. Arrests were announced as the last of eight indictments were processed. The grand jury spent days probing whether Gilliam obtained whisky for administration to his sister, Miss Hamma Gilliam of Berne, critically ill after surgery at Adams County Memorial Hospital.
Washington reports Secretary of Commerce Hoover likely to enter the Ohio presidential primary if friends confirm his decision. He would join Senator Willis of Ohio who has urged a genuine delegation for Kansas City in June.
Cordova Alaska February 7 se vere earth tremors were felt at the naval radio station late last night lasting about ten seconds. The tremors were an east and west motion and were reported to be felt at High Brook. No damage was reported.
Word reached Washington of the serious injury to O. M. Purcell formerly of Wichita Kansas and a resident of the Cumback area. Purcell's car overturned, he was thrown through the windshield badly cut with an arm torn. He was taken to Wichita hospital in serious condition.
The civil docket was completed in circuit court today, with trials set for February term. Scheduled cases include the murder trial of Fred McCamp and a fraudulent suit against Mr. Book plus a wrongful death action.
At a noon meeting of the Daviess County Bar Association held in St. Simon's auditorium, officers were elected to succeed themselves. Charles G. Sane Plavian A. Thomas D. John were named as the new officers.
Mrs. George Baker aged about sixty years died at her home near Edwardsport after several months illness. Paralysis reported as the cause. Survived by several children with one named Baker residing in Odon.
Cleveland, Ohio. Feb 7. A national search for Jack Squires and his brother ended with a terrific battle in a hotel room here. Squires is alleged to have embezzled about $256,000 from the Union Compress and Warehouse Company in Memphis.
Kokomo Ind Feb 7 Indictments against Luther F Symons state banking commissioner and Thomas D Barr deputy commissioner were attacked in Howard County circuit court today as defense attorneys filed a motion to quash.
Washington February 7 Republicans moved to sidetrack La Follette anti third term resolution by sending it to the jury committee. La Follette pressed for adoption of the measure.

Bedford Indiana February 7 The body of Jake Henderson 55 a lumberman was found today beneath his overturned automobile His chest had been crushed Henderson who worked at the Spear Lumber Company disappeared after he left there yesterday for his home A man identified as Earlmen who was questioned by police is said to have admitted he switched Henderson when the Siberlinis turned over but failed to explain how he made his way to the wreckage Money identified as Hendersons was in Coulters pocket Coroner Emerson said he suspected foul play.
