Chicago officers raided an apartment on New Year’s Eve, arresting nine armed men and halting a central office for a large liquor ring. Officers found dum-dum bullets, a piano, and a golf bag with shells. Police later raided two fashionable night clubs, seizing liquor as potential evidence for arrests.
The executive board of District No 11 United Mine Workers adopts John L. Lewis recommendations to resume normal operation at Glenfa Baker and Peerless mines in Sullivan field. About 700 men will return to work after a contract dispute over Purdue University E. Elliott’s decision. District officers will seek reemployment on a game basis for those discharged and submit differences to Lewis for review.
Columbus, Ind. December 31. Benjamin Palmer an able bodied resident sought help for himself and family from the cityship trustee and was arrested on vagrancy by officers who told Mayor Karard that Palmer had repeatedly refused work. The mayor ordered Palmer to work then released him.
Senator Perkins proposes a four county reapportionment to create an extra congressman. The proposed district would combine Marion, Hamilton, Madison and Hancock counties with a total population of 539,097, while Lake County would become its own district with 261,325 residents. The third district would tally 268,463 and include Knox, Daviess, Martin, Lawrence, Sullivan, Greene, Monroe, Brown, Owen, Morgan and Johnson counties.
Explosions hit a motion picture theatre in New Orleans causing extensive damage and injuring more than twenty people. Several victims were identified as tenants in nearby structures, with several residences also affected by the blast fallout.
The farmers of Daviess County will attend a four day educational and social program at the farmers institutes in January as announced by county agricultural agent Johlu Jensen.
