Surplus to Trim State Debt as Year Ends
Indianapolis August 27 government will end the present fiscal year with a surplus of about half a million dollars. State officials say the extra funds will reduce the state debt of 2 1/2 billion, a pledge by Governor Jackson to wipe out the debt. Major portions come from the public service and other departments with larger amounts also restored from unused appropriations. Some state institutions nearly exhaust appropriations, with Michigan City prison cited as near limit. The Public Service Commission reports it largely supports itself from fees, with yearend collections approaching the appropriations. A Rome report notes plans for a municipal bath house modeled on ancient Rome.
