A rescue operation recovered a body from quicksand at the dig site. Workers used a cofferdam and forced air device to free the victim. Authorities are investigating the incident and identifying the deceased.
The B&O and Southwestern crews located three bodies quickly, then Theodore Gharst, the engineer, on Tuesday afternoon after over five hours of digging. Lucas, aged twenty one, found another body near the trestle about three hundred yards south of Reason Jackson’s grave. Sand, water, and quicksand hindered the recovery, but a cofferdam and pumps finally freed Gharst from the sand and he was identified by features and recovered for burial at Gill morgue.
The article honors Master Mechanic Carey and foreman W. W. Calder and the crew of the I. and O. Southwestern Railroad for their search effort to recover bodies Shaffer and Gharsti after a sand burial. Probes and boats were deployed, Calder personally directed the operation, and a funeral is planned for Clifford MeLemore’s night yardmaster’s hat found nearby.

Veru Indiana April 24 Circuses face tough work skimming hides from drowned elephants. Eight elephants perished in the flood and their hides were transported to Newark New Jersey. Hides weighed over 1196 pounds combined with skin thickness about one inch. Mr Wallace received about 1600 dollars for the hides.
The cornfield south of the B and C Southwestern railroad embankment yields visitors who view water filled beds and sunken fields where bodies of Reason Jackson Chiffard McLegore Theodore Gharst and Daniel Shaffer were found.
