Rescue teams recover Reason Jackson and Clifford McLemore from White River floodwaters after the Engine 401 crash near Hawkins Creek. Identifications cite clothing, teeth, and pocket notes. Other victims include engineers Shaffer Stevens and yardmasters Charst and Reed, with several rescued or missing.
The crash left McLemore and Jackson dead in the engine cab as floodwaters swept the river. Brought to light by Sunday’s low water, the bodies lay near driftwood along the stream’s bend, while searchers Sunday hoped to recover two more men, Shaffer and Charst, believed buried in sandbars.
The Riverside Coal Mine near the city sold today at 3 PM at Alvin Padrett's office. Receiver John Dosch oversaw the auction after court appointed him. A Kentucky bidder named Kethem offered the mines at $4,000.
Hamburg reports slow venom caused the death of Karl Hagenbeck the animal collector on April 14 after a bite seven years earlier. A physician attending said the venom finally affected his liver. In Paterson New Jersey silk workers strike news notes silk being dyed abroad for shipment back to Pennsylvania factories, with about 50,000 pounds already at sea allocated for dyeing in several European countries.
A five year old boy from Hastings and a young man from Elnora died in separate incidents. The child was fatally injured when a wagon wheel struck his chest on a farm near Elnora. Coroner H. Holder ruled the death accidental after a 14 hour interval. Charles H. Miller, twenty four, died at his father-in-law’s home in Emor from tuberculosis after over a year illness. Funeral services for Miller were held at the Christian church in Elnora led by Rev. C. H. Buchanan.

Mrs Catherine Dennis widow of Frederick Dennis longtime Davies County resident died at 1 30 am at the home of her son Samuel Dennis on the Bruner road west of Three with whom she made her home. She suffered from rheumatism seven years and was born in Saint Mary county later living in Davies County She leaves four sons Henry Samuel Fred and John Her funeral will be from Samuel Dennis home Tuesday afternoon with burial at a local cemetery.
Theodore 7 Pringle, aged about sixty, died Friday afternoon at Bloomfield from bronchial illness after a brief illness of two to three weeks. He was born and raised locally and had lived in Bloomfield for around twenty years, formerly serving as county clerk of Greene County and state accountant. He married Amy McCornick of Washington. Mrs. Charles Jones, Mrs. Lucian Corning, and John Lillie returned home after attending his funeral in Bloomfield.
