A large crowd attended a ceremony where a statue of the Saviour was unveiled in New York. A bishop delegated authority to a pastor who presided as the crucifix was cut to the church by a payer. Reports from the event describe tension and security concerns during the display.
British forces report slight advance east of Warre and south of Corbie on the Somme front. French detachments have committed minimal forces to overwhelm twenty-five German divisions, capturing prisoners and guns while German morale sags and reposed reserves are stretched thin.
Burke, county council of defense chairman, announced Sousa's Marine Band will visit Washington Thursday to participate in the Liberty Loan celebration. The group arrives at 1 pm and departs at midnight, expected to add interest to the largest parade yet and to perform a concert in the evening before a mass meeting chaired by Michael FE Foley.
WII Ham Dennigan and Fred A Stewart, each from different parties, led Liberty Day observances at Mary's Church. Rev. William A Jochum delivered strong talks urging patriotism, conservation, loyalty, and support for liberty loan. A large turnout heard the Mass and another sermon emphasizing civic duty and government support.
The British military attaché Major General J. J. MacLachlan reports that Allied reserves are growing, with fresh contingents from allied and American forces swelling the front. He notes German efforts are likely but that each day the Allies gain a stronger position.
Washington reports more than 250 million dollars in Liberty bond sales as public response grows across the nation. Officials note figures are not yet fully corrected but indicate broad support for financing the war effort and resisting Germany. The appeal urges citizens to buy a bond.
George Rodgers died at 11:30 p.m. Sunday at his home in Bogard township after years of paralysis worsened by Bright's disease. He was 71, and is survived by his wife and several sons.
The primary filing deadline passed with no clear slate for Washington township trustees as Will Bacon failed to file and others like George Hopkins and S. O. Rev John F O Hare preached at St Simons Church urging parishioners to buy liberty bonds to the limit of their means. He attributed the war to German greed and extolled the duty of every citizen to support the government. He noted forty percent of U S armed forces were Catholic and urged backing the boys with bonds.
Washington reports a bond house moving to pass fifteen military bills before adjournment amid fast deliberations. The Senate debated a bill to jail propagandists while leaders push elimination of debate as Mrs. William Hearst returns to Terre Haute after visiting Henry Stone on South East Sixth Street.
An important organization meeting for the Liberty Loan will be held at city hall tonight at 7 50 o clock. Final arrangements for the drive will be made by the committee and workers will be assigned to canvass for bond sales.
The Women's Missionary Society of the Indiana Presbytery will hold two days of sessions starting Tuesday at 9 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Delegates from cities statewide will attend. public is invited to all meetings. Tuesday night features a talk by C. S. Williams of South America. Luncheons and suppers served by Methodist women.
